President Donald Trump's family has earned at least $2.3 billion from their main cryptocurrency ventures since the start of his current term, while ordinary investors in the same projects have lost roughly the same amount, according to a Reuters investigation published on Tuesday.
The report found that nearly $1.4 billion of the family's gains came from sales of governance tokens issued by World Liberty Financial, a project that promised to build and democratise a new financial system. Those tokens have since fallen sharply in value, leaving everyday investors with significant losses.
Other ventures that reportedly generated income for Trump and his family include the $TRUMP meme coin, AI Financial Corp., and American Bitcoin. Stock prices of these two companies have also declined significantly, the report said.
The Reuters report noted that the Trump family's approach to cryptocurrency mirrors a business model long used in real estate, relying on branding rather than investing their own funds. The family reportedly earns fees and royalties from licensing the Trump name to various crypto projects, while taking on little to no financial risk themselves.
The investigation raises questions about the ethics of a sitting president's family profiting from volatile and poorly regulated financial instruments, particularly when ordinary investors who followed Trump's endorsements have suffered heavy losses...
