I've been taking the bus most of my life. It's incredible how much time you can waste, waiting for the bus, switching lines, stopping at places you don't want to go, etc. Being poor is *very* expensive ... if you want to cash a check, do laundry, etc., you pay through the nose. The best remedy I've found for that is simply not buy anything I absolutely don't need! Fortunately you have neighbors who can help you out, you have skills you can barter ...
