My wife was out of town for work for a few days, so I started watching a series on Netflix called Narcos, Mexico. It's based on true events about the drug trade, with dramatic liberties to character interactions - a tellenovella based on true events, essentially. (It's actually pretty good).
ReplyDeleteAnyway, season two requires the main protagonist to struggle to survive by ensuring that his relationship with the corrupt ruling elites stays strong, or his drug empire will collapse. This introduces the audience (s2,e7) to the very real history of how the Mexican presidential elections of 1988 were rigged, got exposed in real time (s2,e8) due to a newly implemented "computer tabulation" system, and forces the protagonist to use his connections to send henchmen to each and every polling station to manually add a zero to the official vote tally, in favor of the ruling party. Once the election was over, the people protested and demanded investigations, but the ruling party, immediately and openly destroyed all the evidence, the very next day.
Probably because it's fresh in my mind, as I'm watching your video I couldn't help but think of this, and decided to double check. Shenanigans still take place, but they still use paper ballots in clear plexiglass, voter ID, and so far as I can tell, only allow e-voting for nationals out of the country. Despite the crippling corruption issues that still plague the country, they won't allow black box voting - unlike their neighbors to the north.
Just wanted to add that tidbit to the mix. Hope your feeling better soon.

On elections, i always liked reading in books b4 the 'net about the days of the big old klunky mechanical voting machines, which iirc had a teletype ticker kind of vote record. the 1960 US prez election so many stories about that one in Chicago, where the mob "promised" to deliver the vote for JFK.
So on polling day, at open, the first voters in were a little shocked to find that depending on precinct/candidate, the machines were pre-loaded with different numbers of votes for JFK (in the many hundreds) , depending on which candidate was in each precinct of course & how weak/strong he was, so just like handicap in a horse race, the weaker one would have a higher pre-loaded lead!
SIMPLE!
And u can bet they got expert advice on the handicap leads from their very own horse race handicappers.

Things are very serious here in the UK. My electricity gas bill was £1900 per year. It then went up to £3400 with the first price hike from April 2022. There is another 65% price hike due on 1st Oct 2022, which will take my annual Gas/Electricity bill up to £5610 per year, which is a £467.50 per month bill. On top of this food prices and petrol pump prices have sky rocketed. What the hell is going on?
