BRICS calls for Israeli withdrawal from Lebanon in joint FMs statement

from al Mayadeen English

The foreign ministers of BRICS member states called for Israeli withdrawal from Lebanese territory and urged full respect for Lebanon’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

In a statement published by India's Ministry of External Affairs on Friday, following a meeting in the Indian capital under India’s chairmanship, the ministers called on "Israel" to withdraw its occupying forces from all Lebanese territory, including several positions in southern Lebanon where troops reportedly remain deployed.

The BRICS foreign ministers recalled the existing ceasefire agreement in Lebanon and called on all parties to strictly adhere to its terms, while condemning continued ceasefire violations and stating that such actions undermine regional stability and diplomatic efforts to maintain peace.

The statement highlighted the essential role of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) in maintaining stability along the border.

BRICS members stressed the importance of ensuring the safety, security, and freedom of movement of all UN personnel and equipment, as well as respecting the inviolability of UN premises.

The ministers condemned all attacks against UNIFIL installations and personnel, stating that such acts constitute violations of international law and UN Security Council Resolution 1701. They reiterated the importance of protecting UN peacekeeping missions and ensuring their ability to operate without obstruction in conflict zones.

Foreign ministers from the BRICS group of nations gathered in New Delhi for a two-day meeting opening Thursday, a preparatory gathering ahead of the 18th BRICS leaders' summit India will host in September, with the US-Israeli war on Iran and its cascading energy crisis set to overshadow the bloc's formal agenda of multilateral reform and Global South cooperation.

India, holding the BRICS chairmanship for 2026, hosted the high-level gathering at Bharat Mandapam Convention Centre, chaired by External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar.

The meeting brought together representatives from all eleven BRICS member states: Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Iran, Egypt, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates.
