The House approved on Thursday a three-year extension of health care tax credits that expired at the end of last year, with a group of Republicans joining Democrats to propel the measure to passage in the lower chamber.
In a 230 to 196 vote, 17 Republicans joined all Democrats in favor of the measure. The legislation is unlikely to pass the Senate in its current form, but some lawmakers are hopeful it will serve as the starting point for a broader compromise.
"Today, let's celebrate a victory of getting something done," Democratic Rep. Tom Suozzi of New York told reporters Thursday. "And then, we'll start working on the policy issue next week related to what's the common ground in the Senate that we can get to the next step."...

Millions of Americans are bracing for higher health costs in 2026, as subsidies that help them pay for health insurance under the Affordable Care Act are set to expire on December 31.
Experts warn that a failure in Congress to extend the tax credits could be financially devastating for individual policyholders, while also raising health care costs as a whole. Roughly 22 million Americans receive the ACA subsidies, which were created in 2021 to lower households' monthly premiums.
New data from investment adviser SmartAsset projects how much people around the U.S. with an ACA plan would have paid on average for coverage in 2025 if they hadn't received the enhanced subsidies. As the analysis shows, monthly premiums for the government health insurance would've been hundreds of dollars higher.
In Mississippi, where around 11% of residents are enrolled in an ACA plan, participants would have seen their average monthly premiums jump from $41 to $605, a 1,376% increase, SmartAsset found. In West Virginia, enrollees' premiums would have risen an average of 1,058%.
A spokesperson for SmartAsset said the analysis captures 2025 costs, but noted the data amounts to a "close approximation" of how much more people with ACA coverage could expect to pay next year without the tax credits. ..

The 216-211 vote on the legislation also capped a dramatic day for Speaker Mike Johnson, who can hardly call the measure’s passage a victory after spending the balance of the day managing an open revolt by his moderate flank.

Republicans are floating the narrative that they can't/won't approve of extending the ACA subsidies unless there is a modification of the Hyde amendment (2010) which prohibits federal funds being used to pay for abortions. It's a rouse, something to use as leverage while negotiating. It's obviously a non-starter, a deal-breaker for the Dems, like a nuclear option tactic. Perhaps this is just what the fake left needs to justify killing the ACA subsidies... perhaps it's just a negotiation point they can offer up in order to get what they really want, reductions in regulations that already exist on the insurance companies in the ACA marketplace. We wont know until well after they vote today on the bill and TrumpyBear signs it. We will see.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer on Friday offered—and Republican leadership rejected—a compromise deal to end the longest federal shutdown in US history, an agreement under which Democrats proposed to vote to reopen the government in exchange for a one-year extension of expiring Affordable Care Act health insurance subsidies.
“It’s clear we need to try something different,” Schumer (D-NY) asserted on the Senate floor, noting the 14 failed upper chamber votes on the short-term continuing resolution passed by the House of Representatives in September to fund the government through November 21.

Senate Democrats have now voted 13 times to not fund the food stamp program, also known as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). Bottom line, the well has run dry. At this time, there will be no benefits issued November 01. We are approaching an inflection point for Senate Democrats. They can continue to hold out for healthcare for illegal aliens and gender mutilation procedures or reopen the government so mothers, babies, and the most vulnerable among us can receive critical nutrition assistance.
This is sick. It's a lie first of all. The republicans aren't even in the House, they are still on extended vacation keeping one woman from being sworn in to protect Trump from Epstein disclosures and to keep them from having to negotiate a deal to get the government off this needless shutdown which Russ Vought and the Heritage Foundation are using to literally destroy our form of government.

Next year, Americans who buy health insurance through the Affordable Care Act exchanges are set to pay significantly more for coverage—and experts say policies advanced by President Donald Trump and congressional Republicans are at least partially to blame.
An analysis released Friday by the health policy research organization KFF and the Peterson Center on Healthcare found that across a sample of more than 105 ACA marketplace insurers in 19 states and the District of Columbia, companies are set to increase premiums by a median of 15%.
The analysis noted that insurers have cited a number of factors to justify pushing up premiums, including Trump's tariffs—which could drive up drug, equipment, and supply costs—and the expectation that the Republican-controlled Congress will not extend ACA tax credits that are set to expire at the end of the year.
"If Congress takes no action to renew these enhanced tax credits, enhanced subsidies will expire at the end of 2025, which will cause premium payments for subsidized enrollees to increase by over 75% starting in January 2026," the analysis states. "Insurers expect a large share of enrollees to leave the market, and that those enrollees will be healthier on average, thus leaving the risk pool sicker on average."...
