(Delcy has no authority to rule in Venezuela. Their Supreme Court gave her 90 days but said after that the legislature would have to vote to extend it which they didn't. Marco Rubio says they need time to fully neoliberalize the country and 'rebuild the institutions' in the country to better suit our oligarchs and corporations before allowing them to have some democracy. Opposition leader and Nobel laureate María Corina Machado reappeared in Venezuela Sunday for the first time since December, returning from exile at a time when doubts about the country’s democratic future — and the role of the U.S. — are growing.

It was her first appearance since the U.S. military deposed the country’s then-President Nicolás Maduro in January, replacing him with an interim president who has exceeded the time she was authorized to serve, with no election scheduled.

Machado announced her arrival on social media, writing, “I am here. With you.”

Another leading figure in the Venezuelan opposition, Edmundo González, wrote on X that he would be at her side “very soon.”

“Today is a very important day for Venezuelans,” he wrote. “Our sovereign voice returns with her to lead and guide this process!”...

Venezuela’s Delcy Rodríguez defends ‘endless’ benefits of her oil deal with Trump

Deal that will reportedly see US take control of 65bn barrels of Venezuelan oil has provoked outrage in her country.

Venezuela’s interim president, Delcy Rodríguez, has defended her government’s highly controversial energy deal with Donald Trump, insisting the South American country will maintain ownership and sovereignty over its massive oil reserves.

Rodríguez, who assumed power in January after Trump ordered the abduction of the president, Nicolás Maduro, took to the airwaves on Saturday to push back against criticism of what the US president has called “the biggest oil deal in world history”.

“The benefits are endless,” claimed Rodríguez, a former vice-president whom Trump backed after ordering Maduro’s capture during a special forces raid on the capital, Caracas.

During a six-minute television broadcast, Venezuela’s acting leader claimed the deal would help her resource-rich country develop its economy, earn revenues of more than $209bn (£154bn), and become “an energy powerhouse”...

But the deal has provoked outrage, both among members of Venezuela’s opposition and within the Chavismo political movement of which Rodríguez is part.

Speaking on Friday, one prominent opposition figure, who asked not to be named, called the agreement “a massive land grab” by a “rapacious, mafioso United States”.

Writing on X, Rafael Ramírez, the former head of Venezuela’s state-owned oil company PDVSA, accused Rodríguez’s administration of “driving a dagger straight into the heart of the homeland” with the “neocolonial” transaction. “They are handing over 65bn barrels of our reserves to the United States. That has never happened in Venezuela, and I think nowhere else in the world,” Ramírez added in an interview with the newspaper El Nacional.

On Saturday, dozens of leftwing protesters marched through Caracas with banners reading: “We are neither a colony, nor a back yard” and “Yankees go home!”

Critics of the agreement shared an ironic meme on social media suggesting the state oil company’s name should be changed from PDVSA to “PDUSA”...

Leaders of a key local stronghold in Caracas have been warned that the U.S. is planning a joint operation to root out resistance and eliminate the leadership of the 23 de Enero Parish, Juan Contreras, the main spokesperson of the Simón Bolívar Coordinator, a 33-year-old grassroots organization, told Drop Site News.

According to elements of the Venezuelan government loyal to Chavismo, the political movement associated with former President Hugo Chávez, U.S. agencies are developing plans for a “large-scale operation” targeting the well-organized working-class stronghold, said Contreras, a prominent political organizer and parish leader who served as a deputy in the National Assembly between 2010 and 2015.

The State Department did not answer questions about the allegations.

23 de Enero is a densely populated, hilly parish characterized by large public housing blocks and a thriving political life. Its proximity to Miraflores Palace and key military posts makes it strategically important, and since 1998 it has served as an ideological stronghold for Chavismo, carrying a legacy of popular struggle from the fall of the Pérez Jiménez dictatorship in 1958 through the armed resistance movements of the 1960s–1980s against police persecution and neoliberal policies. That legacy proved decisive during the 2002 U.S.-backed coup, when residents from the city’s lower income areas helped secure Chávez’s return to power. Today, the parish is home to numerous assembly-driven organizations, including communes that are leading the country’s socialist aspirations.

Contreras said the information reached the Coordinator “directly through an internal source linked to patriotic officials” connected to Venezuela’s Bolivarian National Police (PNB). In a communiqué published June 3, the Coordinator warned of the rumored joint operation between the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration and the PNB’s Special Tactical Operations Unit (UOTE), operating from command centers in Flores de Catia, a sector geographically contiguous with the 23 de Enero. Since then, according to the Simón Bolívar Coordinator, the information has been corroborated by the group’s longstanding connections inside the Venezuelan state.

“To try to neutralize us, they intend to use rotten sectors of the police apparatus in complicity with the DEA, attempting to impose the same infamous narrative and framework they used to justify the act of war on January 3,” Contreras said, warning that Washington may attempt to “falsely link social organizations with drug trafficking and crime.” Contreras said this was the same playbook used when the U.S. branded the Nicolás Maduro government a “cartel” to justify the abduction and transfer of the Venezuelan president and his wife National Assembly deputy Cilia Flores to stand trial in New York on alleged “narcoterrorism” charges. The presidential couple has pleaded not guilty and their trial is scheduled to begin on June 1, 2027.

Maybe he should dispatch Mr. Rubio permanently to Caracas, the Venezuelan capital, where U.S. commandos had carried out the proudest foreign policy achievement of Mr. Trump’s second term: the capture of Nicolás Maduro, the country’s president.

Mr. Rubio could be the next leader of Venezuela, Mr. Trump suggested. And while the president’s aides say he was joking — and that he frequently teases Mr. Rubio about an overseas assignment — the fact is that Mr. Rubio does not need to move to Caracas.

He already runs Venezuela from Washington.

In the six months since U.S. forces blew open Mr. Maduro’s bedroom door and snatched him in the dead of night, Mr. Rubio has become the de facto viceroy of Venezuela, holding sway over a sovereign nation in a way that no American official has since L. Paul Bremer III arrived in Baghdad in 2003 to run U.S.-occupied Iraq

Mr. Rubio now effectively controls Venezuela’s finances, the distribution of its natural resources and its government, according to interviews with more than a dozen officials and people close to both governments in Washington and Caracas, who provided details about his involvement in steering the country’s policies. Many spoke on condition of anonymity to describe private interactions and internal discussions.

While he has not visited Venezuela in person since the U.S. took over, the secretary of state is deeply involved in the country’s day-to-day operations, keeping in close contact with Delcy Rodríguez, who was Mr. Maduro’s vice president and now leads her country on an acting basis, with the imprimatur of the United States. The two exchange messages in Spanish on WhatsApp, trading gossip, birthday greetings and selfies.

Despite the banter, the relationship between Mr. Rubio and Ms. Rodríguez is far from a partnership. It is a manifestation of Trump-era American power, in which the winner takes all regardless of sovereignty and international law.

It had to be someone in the military, high ranking in the military or intelligence agencies, who helped Delcy Rodriquez capture Nicholas Maduro and his wife and hand them over to the Americans.

It was a former graduate of the School of the Americas, General Gustavo Gonzalez Lopez, who has also just been raised to the head of the Venezuelan military, replacing a man who had been loyal to the nation and the Bolivarian revolution for over a decade.

'Venezuela's acting President Delcy Rodriguez said on Wednesday that General Gustavo Gonzalez Lopez will take over as ​defense minister from General Vladimir Padrino... 

Rodriguez in January appointed ​Gonzalez Lopez, 65, as the head of the presidential guard and the General Directorate of Military Counterintelligence (DGCIM).

 

Gonzalez Lopez, who has been ​sanctioned by the U.S. and EU for rights violations and corruption, previously served as Venezuela's domestic intelligence director until ⁠mid-2024. Later that year, he began working with Rodriguez as head of strategic affairs at state oil company PDVSA, which she then oversaw as ​energy minister. He is also a former interior minister and joined the armed forces in his early twenties.

 

Gonzalez Lopez's promotion will not mark a major change ​in Rodriguez's policy of compliance with U.S. demands on oil, mining and the release of some people classed as political prisoners, a source with knowledge of the matter told Reuters.' Reuters

 As a young man Lopez served in the Venezuelan military before the 1999 revolution. In fact, he was so well thought of... they sent him to the School of the Americas to learn from the best.

Venezuela’s Delcy Rodríguez assured US of cooperation before Maduro’s capture

Before the US military snatched Venezuela’s president, Nicolás Maduro, earlier this month, Delcy Rodríguez and her powerful brother pledged to cooperate with the Trump administration once the strongman was gone, four sources involved at high levels with the discussions told the Guardian.

Rodríguez, who was sworn in on 5 January as acting president to replace Maduro, and her brother Jorge, the head of the national assembly, secretly assured US and Qatari officials through intermediaries ahead of time that they would welcome Maduro’s departure, according to the sources.

The communications between US officials from Delcy Rodríguez, who was then Maduro’s vice-president, began in the fall and continued after Trump and Maduro spoke in a crucial phone call in late November, the Guardian has learned, in which Trump insisted that Maduro leave Venezuela. Maduro rejected the demand.

By December, one American who was involved told the Guardian that Delcy Rodríguez told the US government she was ready: “Delcy was communicating ‘Maduro needs to go.’ 

“She said, ‘I’ll work with whatever is the aftermath,’” another person familiar with the messages said.

The sources say Marco Rubio, Trump’s secretary of state and national security adviser, at first a skeptic about working with regime elements, came to believe that Delcy Rodríguez’s promises were the best way to prevent chaos once Maduro was gone...

Trump claims secret ‘discombobulator’ weapon was used to help capture Maduro

President Donald Trump said the US used a weapon he referred to as a “discombobulator” to capture then-Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro this month, but a senior US official said he’s likely conflating tools used by the US military.

“The discombobulator, I’m not allowed to talk about it,” Trump told the New York Post in an interview that published Saturday but added that it “made [enemy] equipment not work” during the capture.

The president may be conflating several capabilities into a single weapon that doesn’t exist, a senior US official told CNN. US forces did use cyber tools to disable early warning and other Venezuelan defense systems during the operation, it also utilized existing acoustic systems to disorient personnel on the ground.

The US military also for years has had a heat ray weapon, called the Active Denial System, which uses directed, pulsed energy. It’s not clear whether that was used as well.

CNN has previously reported that the ADS, according to the US military, is a nonlethal weapon that shoots an invisible beam of electromagnetic waves that can reach a little more than half a mile away. It penetrates human skin and creates a heating sensation that causes people to move away from the beam.

A few days after Maduro’s capture, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt reposted comments purportedly from a Venezuelan security guard who claimed the US “launched something” during the operation that “was like a very intense sound wave.”

“Suddenly I felt like my head was exploding from the inside,” the security guard added. “We all started bleeding from the nose. Some were vomiting blood. We fell to the ground, unable to move.”

Venezuelan Acting President Delcy Rodríguez met with US Chargé d’Affaires Laura Dogu in Miraflores Presidential Palace on Monday afternoon.

According to Communications Minister Miguel Pérez Pirela, the meeting took place “in the context of the working agenda” between Caracas and Washington. National Assembly President Jorge Rodríguez was likewise present.

Dogu confirmed the high-level audience with Venezuelan leaders via social media, saying that she reiterated Washington’s intended “three-phase plan” for the Caribbean nation.

“Today I met with Delcy Rodríguez and Jorge Rodríguez to reiterate the three phases that Secretary of State Marco Rubio has proposed for Venezuela: stabilization, economic recovery and reconciliation, and transition,” she said.

The US diplomat, who was previously stationed in Honduras, arrived in Caracas on Saturday, vowing that her team is “ready to work.” US State Department officials had visited the Venezuelan capital previously to assess conditions for the reopening of the US embassy.

US President Donald Trump has told India to stop purchasing oil from Iran and instead supply its energy demands by buying crude from Venezuela.

“India is coming in, and they’re going to be buying Venezuelan oil as opposed to buying it from Iran. So, we’ve already made that deal, the concept of the deal,” Trump told reporters on board Air Force One on Saturday.

Earlier, Trump had threatened to slap fresh tariffs on India if New Delhi did not halt its purchase of oil from US adversaries.

However, New Delhi had resisted the threat, reminding the US president that Washington had no authority to determine the trading relations of other nations.

Trump is openly saying that he has taken full control of Venezuela’s oil industry following the US forces' kidnapping of the South American country’s president, Nicolas Maduro.
