Tens of thousands of protesters have gathered in Tel Aviv to demand the resignation of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the return of hostages still held by Hamas in Gaza.
Nearly six months to the day since Israel declared war on Hamas, around 100,000 people gathered in Tel Aviv’s Democracy Square on Saturday evening, protest organizers claimed. Carrying Israeli flags and chanting anti-government slogans, the demonstrators called for early elections and implored Netanyahu to strike a deal with the Palestinian militants to release more than 100 Israelis thought to remain in captivity.
Speaking at a pre-protest press conference, Einav Zangauker, whose son was taken to Gaza as a hostage, claimed that Netanyahu is deliberately avoiding a deal with Hamas in order to please his far-right coalition partners.
“Netanyahu is failing the deal on purpose and he is standing between us and our loved ones in Gaza,” Zangauker said, according to the Times of Israel. “The hostages don’t have time for elections and to wait, the obstacle to the deal must be removed now and Netanyahu replaced immediately.”

Shin Bet chief Ronen Bar on Wednesday issued a warning to protesters after an attempted breach of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s residence by a large group of people during an anti-government demonstration in Jerusalem the previous night.
“The violent discourse online and some of the scenes we saw tonight in Jerusalem go beyond acceptable protest, harm the ability to maintain public order, could lead to violent clashes with law enforcement, disrupt their ability to carry out their work and even cause harm to individuals under protection,” said Bar.
“There is a clear line between legitimate protest and violent and illegal protest. This is a worrying trend that could lead to dangerous places which we must not come to,” he added.
Tuesday night’s demonstration, which began at the Knesset and ended near Netanyahu’s residence in Jerusalem’s upscale Rehavia neighborhood, descended into what police described as an “unbridled riot” when demonstrators closed in on the premier’s home. Officers and demonstrators were treated for injuries sustained throughout the night, including one officer at whom a protester had lobbed a burning torch.
Tuesday was the third in a four-day protest featuring a hundreds-strong encampment around the Knesset building. The third day of a four-day anti-government demonstration in Jerusalem descended into chaos on Tuesday night when marchers attempting to bypass police barricades split into multiple directions in order to reach the private residence of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
The march began with a series of speeches outside the Knesset given by family members of the hostages, anti-government activists and former prime minister Ehud Barak — a vocal critic of Netanyahu.
Though the procession from the Knesset began as a unified mass of people led by relatives of the hostages and veteran activists who rose to prominence last year amid Israel’s since-paused judicial overhaul, it fragmented when its thousands of marchers flooded the narrow streets of Jerusalem’s wealthy Rehavia neighborhood where the Netanyahus live.
After encountering barricades, a handful of protesters with megaphones ran to the front of the march and successfully directed a large contingent of the crowd to take a detour to Netanyahu’s home on Azza Street, catching law enforcement off-guard.
Organizers urged participants to run as quickly as they could to evade crowd control measures. Israel Police called this stage of the march an “unbridled riot.”...

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has revived a push to close down Al Jazeera in Israel.
The Israeli leader demanded on Monday that his coalition government prepare to push legislation through the Knesset that would allow the prime minister to shut down foreign news networks.
Netanyahu, who has long sought to shutter broadcasts from the Qatari-based media outlet, promised to “immediately act to close Al Jazeera” following the law’s adoption, according to a statement from his Likud party.
The bill, passed in a first reading in February, would give the prime minister and the communications minister the authority to order the closure of foreign networks operating in Israel and confiscate their equipment if it is believed that they pose “harm to the state’s security”.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will undergo surgery on Sunday for a hernia, his office said, at a time when he is waging a war against Hamas in Gaza, and less than a year after he was fitted with a pacemaker.
"On Saturday night, during a routine checkup for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, a hernia was found," his office said in a statement, adding that the 74-year-old leader will be under general anesthetic during his surgery later on Sunday.
Signaling his condition was not serious, Netanyahu held a news conference before the procedure, his second hernia surgery since August 2013.
