Türkiye’s determination to join BRICS reflects the appeal of the economic group, which is based on respect for international law and pragmatism, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has said.
Ankara announced in September that it had formally applied to become a full-fledged BRICS member, making it the first NATO state to seek membership in the group.
In an interview with the Turkish daily Hurriyet on Friday, Lavrov said Russia welcomes Türkiye’s bid to become part of the group, which already accounts for 45% of the world’s population.
“We stand for expanding BRICS ties with the
countries of the Global Majority – primarily with those who share a
focus on strengthening multilateral principles, pursue a sovereign
foreign policy, and do not join unilateral sanctions,” the foreign minister stated...
