‘We will not accept the rule of Hamas in Gaza at any stage’: Israel

Israel won’t accept Hamas’s rule of Gaza and is examining alternatives, its defence minister said, a further indication it’s brushing aside a ceasefire proposal announced by US President Joe Biden as Palestinian fighters continue to resist the invasion.

“While we conduct our important military actions, the defence establishment is simultaneously assessing a governing alternative to Hamas,” Defence Minister Yoav Gallant said in a statement on Sunday.

“We will isolate areas, remove Hamas operatives from these areas, and introduce forces that will enable an alternative government to form – an alternative that threatens Hamas,” Gallant added.

“On one hand, military action and on the other the ability to change the government. [This] will lead to the achievement of two of the goals of this war: the dismantling of the Hamas government and its military power, and the return of the hostages. We will not accept the rule of Hamas in Gaza at any stage in any process aimed at ending the war.”..

Türkiye assigns international crew for genocide case against Israel

Türkiye is pressing ahead with the case against Israel at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) it sought to be a party of. The government moved to form a crew of local and international jurists specifically for the case, Sabah newspaper reported.

Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan announced last month that Ankara had decided to join the ICJ genocide trial. “This is a process with myriad legal details and not an ordinary case. Therefore, our experts concentrated their efforts on it. We will present legal documents and carry out the process with local and international lawyers,” he stated recently.

Türkiye’s crew will include academics specialized in law and lawyers. The list of Turkish academics and jurists is largely determined. Türkiye is now selecting international experts on such international cases, especially against Israel. Authorities say crew selection and preparation of a formal document for application may take months. Türkiye first has to decide the legal framework of its application, to avoid having something that may be turned against Türkiye in the future. Turkish citizens have faced genocide allegations in the past by the Armenian lobby.

Türkiye blasts PKK/YPG's 'unacceptable election' plans in Syria

Defense Minister Yaşar Güler on Monday blasted plans by the PKK terrorist group’s Syrian offshoot, the YPG, to conduct so-called local elections in the country’s north as “unacceptable” and a threat to Türkiye’s national security.

Türkiye considers the move as a step by the PKK/YPG toward achieving an “autonomous” status first in Syria before moving to the next stage of its plan: an independent state.

After decades of a bloody campaign for a so-called Kurdish state encompassing Türkiye and Iraq, the PKK strives for legitimacy in Syria’s north, notably with a so-called local election in the coming months in regions controlled by the PKK/YPG.

In a written reply to questions from The Associated Press (AP), Güler reiterated Türkiye’s commitment to establishing a secure corridor along its borders with Syria and Iraq to counter the threat posed by PKK/YPG terrorists.

The PKK/YPG terrorist group, which occupies northern and eastern parts of Syria, has announced plans to hold municipal elections on June 11. The vote to choose mayors will be held in the provinces of Hassakeh, Raqqa, Deir el-Zour and the eastern part of Aleppo province near the Turkish border. Residents in these regions, however, also reject the PKK/YPG’s plans, with dozens taking to the streets last week in protests...

US State Department Forced Scott Ritter Off Plane to Russia, Confiscated His Passport

Ritter was slated to participate in the annual St.Petersburg International Economic Forum as a guest speaker.

 

“As I was boarding my flight out of New York I was pulled aside by three CBP officers, who seized my passport. When asked why, they said orders of the State Department. No further information was provided. My bags were removed from the flight, and I was escorted out of the airport,” the former US Marine intelligence officer told Sputnik.

 

Scott Ritter added that his passport was not given back. He said he will appeal the decision.

Ritter believes US authorities are afraid of his participation in the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF)

San Francisco police detain dozens of pro-Palestinian protesters

Police in San Francisco have detained 70 pro-Palestinian activists after they occupied the Israeli consulate in the US city, in protest against the Jewish state’s military operation in Gaza.

In a post on Instagram, a group named the International Jewish Anti-Zionist Network claimed that 100 people had participated in the demonstration on Monday, which saw activists stage a sit-in in the lobby of the building that houses the Israeli diplomatic mission.

Activists carried placards and unfurled several banners inside the building, reading:“Committing a genocide makes Jews less safe” and “Not in my name!” They also chanted slogans calling for an end to any financial assistance to the Israeli government, as reported by several local media outlets...

‘No one will hold Israel accountable’ as it targets medics in south Lebanon

Most evenings in al-Habbariyeh, a small town in southern Lebanon’s verdant hills, the young volunteers of the Lebanese Emergency and Relief Corps centre liked to get together to play cards or share an argileh (hookah).

On March 26, a clear, brisk night, Abdullah Sharif Atwi, Abdulrahman al-Shaar, Ahmad al-Shaar, Baraa Abu Qais, Hussein al-Shaar, Muhammad al-Farouq Atwi and Muhammad Ragheed Hammoud were in the second-floor hangout.

The Israeli drones hovered overhead, they had been going all day and now their sound was fading almost into the background.

The group was in high spirits, taking videos of themselves and joking about.

About half an hour after midnight, just into March 27, Israel hit the centre with an air strike, levelling the two-storey building.

“People from the village ran down to see what happened,” Ali Noureddine, a journalist and activist from al-Habbariyeh, told Al Jazeera. “It’s a small village,” he said. “We’re all one family.”

Netanyahu shrinks from ceasefire plan as far-right ministers revolt

Benjamin Netanyahu has shied away from a US-backed plan to end the war with Hamas, as Israel’s premier sought space to quell a revolt in his ruling coalition while keeping the White House onside.

 Israel’s war cabinet convened for crunch talks on the potential deal late on Sunday, but officials close to Netanyahu made clear that any agreement to permanently halt the fighting in Gaza would be unacceptable.

 With both pro and anti-deal coalition partners threatening to leave the government, Netanyahu’s office issued two carefully worded statements over the weekend emphasising that Israel would continue its military campaign until Hamas was destroyed, all of the Israeli hostages were released, and Gaza no longer posed a threat. 

Netanyahu’s stance stood in stark contrast to US President Joe Biden, who in a speech on Friday took issue with all three war objectives, while personally endorsing terms for a staged ceasefire deal that he pointedly described as “an Israeli proposal”. ..

President Joe Biden’s description of Israel’s cease-fire proposal was “not accurate,” a senior Israeli official has told NBC News, as doubts grew Monday over the U.S. ally's stance on the deal.

Biden said in a surprise announcement Friday that he was outlining a truce proposal that had been made by Israel and passed by mediators to Hamas. But with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu facing competing pressures — including a threat from right-wing ministers to bring down his government — a senior Israeli official called into question Biden’s description of the cease-fire offer.

The officially specifically disputed that Israel had agreed to fully withdraw its troops from the Gaza Strip as part of a deal to free the hostages.

“Israel has not changed its conditions to reach a permanent cease-fire. That will only happen after our objectives are met including destroying Hamas’s military and governing capabilities,” the official said.
