Obama Administration: Arm al Qaeda? YES WE CAN! (archive)

(archived from March 26, 2011)

by Scott Creighton

Life in Bizzarro Post 9/11 World rolls on.

Today, the administration of our Peace Prize “winning” president is trying it’s level best to find a legal loop-hole in their precious UN resolution 1970 and 1973 which will allow them to arm former (and current) members al Qaeda in Libya.

After using their combined influence, which was substantial, Britain, France, and the United States were able to pressure the U.N. security council into passing resolutions which allowed them to impose a no-fly zone over Libya (for “humanitarian” reasons, of course) and to freeze the assets of the Libyan nationalized oil company and state owned central bank. While resolution 1973 does provide for a range of potential “humanitarian” actions, it specifically rejects three activities…

“… while excluding a (1) foreign occupation force of any form on any part of Libyan territory…”

“… Deplores the continuing flows of (2) mercenaries into the Libyan Arab Jamahiriya and calls upon all Member States to comply strictly with their obligations under paragraph 9 of resolution 1970 (2011) to prevent the provision of armed mercenary personnel to the Libyan Arab Jamahiriya…”

“… to ensure strict implementation of the (3) arms embargo established by paragraphs 9 and 10 of resolution 1970 (2011)…” UN Resolution 1973

So according to the UN resolution, the big three imperial states aren’t allowed to put their own troops on the ground in Libya (something Britain and the U.S. are reported to have already done) nor are they allowed to send (more) mercenaries into the conflict zone.  With those stipulations set into concrete international law, the only thing left for them to do to support their latest “color revolution” is to use US tax-payer dollars to pay for weapons to be handed over to the opposition forces.  Unfortunately for the imperialist coalition, arming any faction in this conflict is also prohibited by the very resolution they pushed for.

And one would think that arming former and possibly current members of al Qaeda might be frowned upon in this post 9/11 world.  According to the current administration, we can’t afford to find money for teachers and our school systems, but when it comes to giving weapons to al Qaeda for the destabilization of another country?  YES THEY CAN!

“But Sky News now understands the US is looking at a legal framework to allow limited supplies of arms to the rebels, if they can prove they need them to defend themselves from attack.

Mark Kornblau, spokesman for US Ambassador Dr Susan Rice, confirmed it was a possibility.

“Resolutions 1970 and 1973, read together, neither specify nor preclude such an action,” he said.

Britain and France are also reported to be considering the legal options.” Sky News

UN resolutions mean nothing to the United States, kind of like international opinion and rule of law. The only time a UN resolution gets any real attention from the US is when the rest of the civilized world wants to impede Israeli aggression against the Palestinian people and in those times the US is very interested in vetoing the resolution.

But the Obama administration is banking on the appearance of legitimacy provided by these very resolutions with regard to Libya. In the states his administration has taken a measure of flack from the “professional left” for effectively declaring a state of war between the US and Libya without congressional approval.  So far they have relied on the UN resolutions as cover for his actions. Now that they are trying desperately to skirt those very resolutions, they risk losing that pretext.

But a little known and even less mentioned aspect of all this is the nature of the “rebels” fighting Gadhafi in Libya.

I have stated many times that regardless of how hard the MSM tries to make one thing look like the other, the fighters in Libya don’t look ANYTHING like the pro-democracy demonstrators from Tunisia, Egypt, Bahrain or Yemen. Even Al Jazeera (once thought of as a legit news source, now, after being praised by Hillary Clinton, they have really exposed themselves as just another global Mockingbird) has taken to referring to the rebels in Libya as a ”pro-democracy” movement. They aren’t peaceful demonstrators like we have seen winning revolutions all across the Middle East and Africa.  These rebels are well-armed mercenaries, fighters, and thugs just like many we have seen across the long span of fake revolutions and destabilization campaigns run by MI6 and the CIA.

I’ve been saying that since day one of this staged, regime change conflict.

Well, news is out now that one of the leaders of the so-called “rebels” of Libya is actually closely affiliated with al Qaeda and he admits that many of his fighters are also members of that little “pro-democracy” group. The guy also fought against US troops in Afghanistan and Iraq and possibly killed US troops in the process.

“In an interview with the Italian newspaper Il Sole 24 Ore, Mr al-Hasidi admitted that he had recruited “around 25″ men from the Derna area in eastern Libya to fight against coalition troops in Iraq. Some of them, he said, are “today are on the front lines in Adjabiya”.

Mr al-Hasidi insisted his fighters “are patriots and good Muslims, not terrorists,” but added that the “members of al-Qaeda are also good Muslims and are fighting against the invader“.

… Mr al-Hasidi admitted he had earlier fought against “the foreign invasion” in Afghanistan, before being “captured in 2002 in Peshwar, in Pakistan”. He was later handed over to the US, and then held in Libya before being released in 2008.” Telegraph

As Mr. al-Hasidi admitted that he recruited many people from Libya it’s important to note that Eastern Libya, Benghazi especially, is a hot-bed of “Islamic fundamentalism” and sends more suicide bombers per capita, to Iraq and Afghanistan than any other Muslim nation.  I wonder how many of Mr. al-Hasidi’s recruits turned out to be suicide bombers.

Webster Tarpley has a very informative article on this subject published today.

In 2007 there was a study (PDF) conducted by the Harmony Project at West Point based on captured personal infomation (PDF) on hundreds of foreign fighters who went to Iraq and Afghanistan to fight coalition forces and create general mayhem by bombing Mosques and Iraqi police stations. The following screen-shot comes from just one of the documents detailing the personal info of foreign fighters in Iraq.

what al Jazeera calls a "pro-democracy" fighter in Libya

The authenticity of the allegedly captured files certainly cannot be verified by this writer. To me it seems counter-intuitive to leave behind a comprehensive list of all your suicide bombers complete with their phone numbers and home addresses.  The public relations aspect of the list is obvious as well as the timing of it’s discovery. Also of note, many of the “terrorists” listed “al Jazeera” as their “home”, again, the PR (propaganda) aspect of that is also pretty obvious.

But there is no question that the admitted links between the “rebels” in Libya and the front group known as al Qaeda do exist and that connection should be deeply troubling to Americans whether they are on the right or the left side of our fake WWE style “democracy”

It is also undeniable that one of the leaders of this “rebellion” was a recruiter of suicide bombers who ended up in Iraq and Afghanistan, and thus he could very well be responsible for numberous deaths of US troops and civilians alike.

In fact, this man has more established connections to terrorism than most of the people in Gitmo combined. He has more connections to acts of terrorism than the US citizen we are hunting in Yemen.  And all of this, he has freely admitted.

And this is the kind of “pro-democracy” freedom fighter that the Obama administration is looking to arm in Libya in order to “protect civilians”.

This is the very kind of disclosure that should make writers like Greenwald and Cole step back and re-evaluate their blind support of this military action in Libya. We will wait and see what direction they take.
