There is a little of confusion concerning Trump’s latest post on Truth Social as he mentioned that Saudi Arabia will not be allowed to produce or enrich its own nuclear fuel.
The agreement signed between the two countries’ energy secretaries does indicate that Saudi Arabia will be allowed to produce its own nuclear fuel though it specified that it won’t be allowed to reach weapon grade.
Secondly, Trump said that this is subject to Saudi Arabia agreeing to the Abraham Accord with Israel. This, also, does not appear to be part of the original agreement either.
This is a 123 deal as it is called. The US has more than 20 such deals with more than 50 countries and institutions, including the UAE, and that deal is different because the UAE is now allowed to enrich its fuel and it has to be subject to inspections by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). The deal between Washington and Riyadh does provide for inspections but does not mention the IAEA.
So there are many questions that arise and no doubt there will be many questions in Congress.
