My advice to HBO would've been to study in detail how the books and the first half of the show ticked, and then try to reconstruct the acclaimed qualities of the dialogue, character development, pacing, worldbuilding, and so on, with new material for the new seasons. A hiatus would likely have lead to this being a good compromise between commercial success and story integrity.
ReplyDeleteI am one of those people who sadly feels a need for catharsis from the bad things happening in real life by seeing villains get punished in fiction, though I admit sad endings can make for more audacious or deeper writing depending on how they are handled.
