Five senior Israeli rabbis have deplored a recent settler incursion into the al-Aqsa Mosque compound in the occupied Old City of al-Quds, highlighting a longstanding ban on Jewish prayers at the holy site.

In a joint video statement released on Wednesday, the rabbis based in al-Quds slammed “radical fringes,” a day after thousands of Israeli settlers, joined by far-right minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, stormed the complex.

Rabbi Yitzhak Yosef emphasized that extremist ministers like Ben-Gvir do not represent Israelis.

“I call on the nations of the world, do not see those ... ministers as representing the people of Israel,” he said.  “Please calm things down… We mustn’t let radical fringes lead us.”...

US, EU, UN condemn Israeli settlers', Ben-Gvir's provocation on Al-Aqsa

The European Union, the U.S. and the U.N. condemned the storming of the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound in occupied East Jerusalem by radical Israeli settlers and the far-right security minister under police protection.

"The EU strongly condemns the provocations by Israeli Min. Ben Gvir who, during his visit to the Holy Sites, advocated for the violation of the status quo," EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell wrote on X.

On Tuesday morning, Ben Gvir and some 2,250 other Israelis walked through the compound in groups, singing Jewish hymns, under the protection of Israeli police, an official from the Waqf, the Jordanian body that is the custodian of the site, told AFP.

Ben Gvir, who has often defied the Israeli government's longstanding ban on Jewish prayer at the mosque compound, vowed to "defeat Hamas" in Gaza in a video he filmed during his visit...

Hundreds of illegal Israeli settlers have stormed the al-Aqsa Mosque compound, with far-right Israeli minister Itamar Ben-Gvir joining them, sparking new tensions with Palestinian Muslims worshiping at the holy site.

More than 1,600 Israeli settlers, who were organized into 13 groups, intruded into al-Aqsa Mosque in the holy occupied city of al-Quds on Tuesday morning, according to the al-Aqsa Mosque affairs department, also referred to as the Waqf.

The settlers' intrusion into the al-Aqsa Mosque compound came in response to a call from extremist Jewish groups to commemorate Tisha B'Av, an annual Jewish fast day that marks the occurrence of several disasters in Jewish history.

The Waqf reported that Israeli forces prevented worshipers from accessing the courtyards of al-Aqsa Mosque, and deployed a significant presence at its entrances to enable the incursion of settlers into the holy Islamic site, which resulted in clashes with Palestinian worshipers...

Iran has strongly condemned the desecration of al-Aqsa Mosque by Israeli settlers and their violent assaults and racist slogans against Palestinians, during a provocative annual march marking the occupation of East al-Quds.

Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kan’ani made the remarks on Wednesday after thousands of extremist settlers encroached on the al-Aqsa Mosque compound during the so-called “flag march,” with some attacking Palestinians and journalists while chanting racist slogans against Palestinians. 

“The extremist Zionists’ provocative desecration of al-Aqsa Mosque, which was carried out with the support of the usurping regime’s military and security forces amid the apartheid entity’s genocide and crimes in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, show Tel Aviv is bent to escalate the crisis in Palestine and the region,” he said.

Kan’ani also emphasized that Palestine and al-Aqsa Mosque are revered by all the true followers of Abrahamic religions.

Israeli far-right minister leads incursion of Al-Aqsa compound

The visit comes as some hardline Israeli Jewish settlers promote the destruction of the Al-Aqsa Mosque.

Israel’s far-right national security minister Itamar Ben-Gvir has led a group of more than one thousand ultranationalist settlers to the Al-Aqsa compound in occupied East Jerusalem, his third such entrance to the site this year.

The provocative minister’s entrance to the holy site on Thursday took place as Jews observed Tisha B’Av, a fast day mourning the destruction of two ancient Jewish temples.

“This place is important to us and we have to return to it and prove our sovereignty,” Ben-Gvir said as he led the group, adding that the “unity of the nation of Israel is important”.
