Tribute to George H.W. Bush: DRUG CARTEL GAVE CONTRAS $10 MILLION, COURT TOLD

by Michael Isikoff, Washington Post 1991

The Medellin cartel, once branded by U.S. officials as the world's most violent and powerful drug-trafficking organization, made a $10 million contribution to the U.S.-backed contra guerrillas fighting during the 1980s to overthrow Nicaragua's Sandinista government, a former cartel leader testified today.

In startling new testimony at the trial of deposed Panamanian leader Manuel Antonio Noriega, convicted smuggler Carlos Lehder, one of the founding members of the Colombian cartel, also implicated top political figures in the Bahamas and Colombia -- major U.S. allies in the war on drugs -- in cartel activities.

The testimony creates a problem for federal prosecutors who have vouched for his credibility and used him as a key witness in their drug-trafficking and racketeering case against Noriega.

Once described by U.S. government officials as the most notorious cocaine trafficker ever apprehended, Lehder was sentenced in 1988 to life plus 135 years. He acknowledged yesterday that he was testifying for the government in hopes of winning a reduced sentence that will allow him to return to Colombia. "As a foreigner, I believe eventually I will be deported back to my country before I die," he said.

Lehder's comments about the cartel's links to the contras could prove invaluable to Noriega's lawyers, who are expected to argue that the Central Intelligence Agency deliberately overlooked and even condoned close connections between the contras and drug traffickers allegedly affiliated with Noriega.

Lehder provided no details about the cartel's alleged financial contributions to the contras and appeared to give the testimony reluctantly under relentless cross-examination by Frank Rubino, Noriega's lead attorney.

Asked whether the cartel had shipped cocaine to the United States using the Costa Rican ranch of American John Hull, a principal figure in the secret contra resupply network organized by then-White House aide Oliver L. North, Lehder said that "could have been" true but that he had no direct knowledge of it.

Then Rubino asked whether the cartel had contributed directly to the contras. "To the best of my recollection, there was some contribution to the contra anti-communist movement," Lehder replied. "It could be around $10 million."

Asked if he personally participated in the contribution, Lehder responded, "Apparently, I did."...

The Bush Family Dynasty

by Steven Lendman

World headlines announced the passing of GHW Bush at age-94, eulogizing him, ignoring the disturbing Bush family legacy.

It’s not pretty. It goes back over four generations – during and after WW I, closely connected to Wall Street and America’s military, industrial, security complex.

George H. Walker and Samuel Prescott were dual founding fathers. Walker was a St. Louis financier, later working for Averell Harriman, a core member of US foreign policy elders known as “The Wise Men,” along with Dean Acheson, George Kennan and others.

They were lawyers, bankers and diplomats, together when Truman became president in 1945, involved in creating the Truman Doctrine to counter Soviet Russia, the Marshall Plan to keep European countries from going communist post-WW II, and Cold War containment, Kennan the chief architect of containing the Soviet Union after Nazi Germany and imperial Japan were defeated...

George H.W. Bush, the CIA and a Case of State-Sponsored Terrorism

by Robert Parry from Consortium News (back when they were actually good in Sept of 2000)

In early fall of 1976, after a Chilean government assassin had killed a Chilean dissident and an American woman with a car bomb in Washington, D.C., George H.W. Bush’s CIA leaked a false report clearing Chile’s military dictatorship and pointing the FBI in the wrong direction.

The bogus CIA assessment, spread through Newsweek magazine and other U.S. media outlets, was planted despite CIA’s now admitted awareness at the time that Chile was participating in Operation Condor, a cross-border campaign targeting political dissidents, and the CIA’s own suspicions that the Chilean junta was behind the terrorist bombing in Washington.

In a 21-page report to Congress on Sept. 18, 2000, the CIA officially acknowledged for the first time that the mastermind of the terrorist attack, Chilean intelligence chief Manuel Contreras, was a paid asset of the CIA.

The CIA report was issued almost 24 years to the day after the murders of former Chilean diplomat Orlando Letelier and American co-worker Ronni Moffitt, who died on Sept. 21, 1976, when a remote-controlled bomb ripped apart Letelier’s car as they drove down Massachusetts Avenue, a stately section of Washington known as Embassy Row...

George H.W. Bush, the 41st U.S. president and father of the 43rd, has died at age 94

from USA Today

George Herbert Walker Bush, the president who managed the end of the Cold War and forged a global coalition to oust Iraqi forces from Kuwait, has died at age 94. In a political career that spanned three decades, he lost his bid for re-election and lived to see his son win the Oval Office.

The death of Bush — nicknamed "41" to distinguish himself from son George W. Bush, "43" — was announced in a statement released late Friday.

"Jeb, Neil, Marvin, Doro and I are saddened to announce that after 94 remarkable years, our dear Dad has died," his son, former President George W. Bush, said in a statement released by family spokesman Jim McGrath. "George H.W. Bush was a man of the highest character and the best dad a son or daughter could ask for. The entire Bush family is deeply grateful for 41's life and love, for the compassion of those who have cared and prayed for Dad, and for the condolences of our friends and fellow citizens."...
