Netanyahu revives push to shut down Al Jazeera in Israel

from al Jazeera

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has revived a push to close down Al Jazeera in Israel.

The Israeli leader demanded on Monday that his coalition government prepare to push legislation through the Knesset that would allow the prime minister to shut down foreign news networks.

Netanyahu, who has long sought to shutter broadcasts from the Qatari-based media outlet, promised to “immediately act to close Al Jazeera” following the law’s adoption, according to a statement from his Likud party.

The bill, passed in a first reading in February, would give the prime minister and the communications minister the authority to order the closure of foreign networks operating in Israel and confiscate their equipment if it is believed that they pose “harm to the state’s security”.

The revived push to shut the station comes as Netanyahu faces huge protests against his handling of Israel’s war with the Palestinian group Hamas....

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will undergo surgery on Sunday for a hernia, his office said, at a time when he is waging a war against Hamas in Gaza, and less than a year after he was fitted with a pacemaker.

"On Saturday night, during a routine checkup for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, a hernia was found," his office said in a statement, adding that the 74-year-old leader will be under general anesthetic during his surgery later on Sunday.

Signaling his condition was not serious, Netanyahu held a news conference before the procedure, his second hernia surgery since August 2013.

"I assure you that I will get through this treatment successfully and return to action very quickly," the prime minister told reporters at the conference...

Clevelanders protest Israel judicial reform vote outside Israel Bonds event

 from Jewish Cleveland News

As Gilad Erdan, permanent representative of Israel to the United Nations, spoke July 25 at Green Road Synagogue in Beachwood, about 50 people gathered outside in protest of Israel’s latest judicial reform measure.

The protest was “an ad hoc, spontaneous act” in response to the Knesset passage of the Reasonableness Standard Law on July 24, Mirit Balkan told the Cleveland Jewish News. Part of the larger judicial overhaul plan that has led to months of demonstrations, the new law aims to prevent judges from striking down government decisions based on “reasonableness.”

“I wanted Cleveland to wake up,” said Balkan, who organized the protest. “Some disturbing things to say the least are happening in Israel, and we’re asking, where are our brothers and sisters here in Jewish Cleveland?”

Netanyahu Forges Ahead With the Coup, but Israel's President Insists on Playing the Mediator

from Haaretz

It took Israel's President Isaac Herzog two full days to respond publicly to the law the Knesset passed Monday. When he did, on Facebook Wednesday, he didn’t mention the repeal of the reasonableness standard nor the danger it poses to Israeli democracy.

He charged the coalition and the opposition jointly with reaching a compromise, while conceding that the former has more responsibility to find solutions.

Israeli far-right minister leads incursion of Al-Aqsa compound

The visit comes as some hardline Israeli Jewish settlers promote the destruction of the Al-Aqsa Mosque.

from al Jazeera

Israel’s far-right national security minister Itamar Ben-Gvir has led a group of more than one thousand ultranationalist settlers to the Al-Aqsa compound in occupied East Jerusalem, his third such entrance to the site this year.

(admin edit: '(Ben-Gvir's) mother was a Kurdish Jewish immigrant who had been active in the Irgun as a teenager and was a homemaker. His family was secular but as a teenager he adopted religious and radical right-wing views during the First Intifada. He first joined a right-wing youth movement affiliated with Moledet, a party which advocated transferring Arabs out of Israel, and then joined the youth movement of the even more radical Kach and Kahane Chai party, which was eventually designated as a terrorist organization and outlawed by the Israeli government" He was too RABID and RACIST even for the IDF)

The provocative minister’s entrance to the holy site on Thursday took place as Jews observed Tisha B’Av, a fast day mourning the destruction of two ancient Jewish temples.

“This place is important to us and we have to return to it and prove our sovereignty,” Ben-Gvir said as he led the group, adding that the “unity of the nation of Israel is important”.

Democracy Ends in Israel as Millions Protest, Doctors Go On Strike and IDF Refuse Service

All of this because a criminal, Bibi Netanyahu, struck a deal with a small Ultra-Right party for support forming his coalition. The ramifications of this new law curbing power of Judiciary to hold Bibi and the fascists in check are mind boggling. Anything these cretins pass into law will be unassailable throughout Israel and the VAST MAJORITY of Israelis are ANGRY.
