US President Donald Trump has imposed steep tariffs on exports from 92 countries, including Canada, Switzerland, Brazil, and India, ahead of his self-imposed August 1 deadline that is expected to reignite global trade tensions.

“We have made a few deals today that are excellent deals for the country,” Trump told reporters on Thursday afternoon after signing executive orders to impose tariffs between 15 and 41 percent on goods from around the global market.

He ordered raising tariffs on Canadian imports to 35 percent for goods deemed non-compliant with the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), citing Canada’s failure to curb fentanyl smuggling across the border, saying Canada had "failed to cooperate" in curbing illicit narcotics flows into the US.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said in a statement that he was “disappointed” with Trump’s tariff hike, adding that “Canadians will be our own best customer.” He emphasized that Canada accounts for just 1 percent of US fentanyl imports, highlighting the minimal role Canada plays in the US fentanyl issue.

"While we will continue to negotiate with the United States on our trading relationship, the Canadian government is laser focused on what we can control: building Canada strong," he said in a post on X.

The decision pertaining to Canada contrasted sharply with Trump's decision to grant Mexico a 90-day reprieve from higher tariffs of 30% on many goods to allow time to negotiate a broader trade pact. However, Trump said the US would continue to levy a 50% tariff on Mexican steel, aluminum, and copper and a 25% tariff on Mexican autos and on non-USMCA-compliant goods subject to tariffs related to the US fentanyl crisis...

Canada has joined several Western countries in announcing its intention to recognise a Palestinian state amid the continuing Israeli atrocities unfolding in Gaza.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney made the announcement on Wednesday.

He explained that Ottawa had hoped that a two-state solution could be achieved through a negotiated peace process, but that approach was “no longer tenable”.

“Canada intends to recognise the State of Palestine at the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly in September 2025,” Carney told reporters.

The move follows a similar announcement by the United Kingdom and France earlier this month.

But it is not clear how such recognitions will impact Israel’s ongoing war in Gaza and the expansion of illegal settlements in the West Bank – the two territories that would form a Palestinian state.

Carney said the recognition is predicated on promises of reform from the Palestinian Authority and President Mahmoud Abbas, as well as a commitment to hold general elections in 2026.

He stressed that Hamas can play no role in the future of Palestine and would not be allowed to take part in future elections, a condition that some argue may taint any democratic process.

US President Donald Trump revealed on Thursday that his administration plans to implement a 35% tariff on Canadian imports, set to take effect beginning August 1.

"It is a Great Honor for me to send you this letter in that it demonstrates the strengths and commitments of our Trading Relationship, and the fact that the United States of America has agreed to continue working with Canada, despite Canada having financially retaliated against the United States," Trump said in a post on his social media platform Truth Social.

"As you will recall, the United States imposed Tariffs on Canada to deal with our Nation's Fentanyl crisis, which is caused, in part, by Canada's failure to stop the drugs from pouring into our country," he stated in a letter addressed to Canada's new Prime Minister, Mark Carney.

President Trump emphasized that instead of collaborating with Washington, Ottawa chose to retaliate with its own tariffs, clarifying that the newly announced 35% levy by the US would be distinct from any existing sector-specific tariffs. Prime minister Mark Carney’s Liberal Party has won Canada's federal election, which was dominated by Donald Trump’s trade war and came in the aftermath of a deadly car-ramming attack in Vancouver.

The Liberals are projected to win more of Parliament's 343 seats than the Conservatives, led by Pierre Poilievre, though they look set to fall short of an outright majority.

In a victory speech in Ottawa, Carney declared that "President Trump is trying to break us so America can own us. That will never — that will never, ever happen."

“We are over the shock of the American betrayal, but we should never forget the lessons,” he said, referring to the American president's threats to Canada's economy and its sovereignty, suggesting it should become the 51st state of the US.

What is Lapu-Lapu Day? Filipinos shocked by festival tragedy in Vancouver

Thousands of Filipinos in Vancouver were celebrating Lapu-Lapu Day on Saturday, marking a defining moment in Philippine history, when tragedy struck - a vehicle drove into the crowd killing multiple people and injuring others.

 

The festival, celebrated especially in the central Philippines, honours Datu Lapu-Lapu, the Filipino chieftain who famously defeated Spanish forces led by Ferdinand Magellan in the Battle of Mactan in 1521 and became a national hero.

 

The centrepiece of the festivities in Vancouver is a multi-block street party in the Sunset neighbourhood featuring Filipino food and traditions, live performances and cultural displays. The party on Saturday was just starting to break up but many people were still in the streets when a dark SUV rammed into the crowd.

 

Police said they were investigating a mass casualty incident and had arrested a 30-year-old Vancouver man at the scene, but did not immediately give the number of fatalities or injured.

 

"We pray that our community remains strong and resilient imbued with the spirit of bayanihan (community spirit) during this difficult time," The Philippine consulate in Vancouver said in a statement...

Nine people have been killed and multiple others injured after the driver of a black SUV slammed into a crowd Saturday evening at a street festival in Vancouver celebrating the contributions of the Filipino-Canadian community, police say.

It happened shortly after 8 p.m. near East 41st Avenue and Fraser Street, where the Lapu Lapu Day Block Party was winding down, after drawing up to 100,000 people through the day.

Interim Vancouver Police Chief Steve Rai says a 30-year-old Vancouver man is now in custody.

Vancouver Coastal Health told The Canadian Press it had confirmed a "code orange," indicating a mass casualty event. The health authority was not able to confirm the number of injured or dead as of late Saturday night, but shortly after 3 a.m. local time Sunday, Vancouver police said on social media that there were nine fatalities...

Several people have been killed and injured after a car plowed into visitors at a Filipino heritage festival held in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.

Vancouver Police Department said the car drove into the crowd at the Filipino community festival after 8 pm (local time) on Saturday.

Local media said the incident left 8 people dead, including one child.

Global News sources said at least six others were injured in the incident.

Police said they had taken the 30-year-old male suspect driving the black SUV used to ram the crowd into custody.

Canadian ‘Victims of Communism’ monument features Nazis – media

Canadian authorities could remove more than half of the names from a planned Memorial to the Victims of Communism in Ottawa due to suspicions that many of the individuals honored could be linked to the Nazis, local media reported Monday.

According to a document obtained by the Ottawa Citizen through an information disclosure request, the Department of Canadian Heritage found that out of the 553 people and organizations originally planned to be mentioned on the monument, 50 to 60 of the names were “were likely directly linked to the Nazis.”

Furthermore, a 2023 report for Canadian Heritage insisted that over 330 names be excluded from the list “to be on the safe side,” as there was not enough information about possible links to the Nazis. It was proposed to remove other names because of there being no direct link to Canada, the outlet said...

India calls Canada arrests over Sikh activist murder ‘political compulsion’

Canada’s investigation into alleged Indian involvement in the assassination of a Sikh separatist in Vancouver last year is a “political compulsion”, India’s foreign minister has said after three Indian citizens were arrested over the killing.

Canadian police on Friday arrested the trio for the murder of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, saying they were investigating their links to the Indian government, “if any”. He migrated to Canada in 1997 and acquired citizenship 18 years later.

He was wanted by Indian authorities for alleged terrorism and conspiracy to commit murder, the allegations he had denied. On June 18, 2023, he was shot dead by masked assailants in the car park of the Sikh temple he led in suburban Vancouver.

Nijjar’s killing sent diplomatic relations between Ottawa and New Delhi into a tailspin last year after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said there were “credible allegations” linking Indian intelligence to the crime.

India rejected the allegations as “absurd”, temporarily halting the processing of visas and forcing Canada to reduce its diplomatic presence in the country significantly.

Canada’s Liberal Government Advances “Online Harms” Censorship Bill

Canada’s Justice Minister Arif Virani has advanced a highly controversial bill, named Bill C-63, proposing comprehensive new legislation aimed at addressing online “hate” speech.

The bill covers seven types of harmful material, from content sexually exploiting or re-victimizing children and survivors, to content promoting violence and extremism.

But it also outlaws online “hatred,” so-called “hate speech,” and forms of deepfakes.

In an attempt to decrease the prevalence of harmful content, this legislation puts the onus on online platforms to be accountable and transparent about how they handle such content.

Platforms like social media and live-streaming services are included under the legislation’s “online services” umbrella.

The bill would also create a new “standalone hate crime offense that would apply to every offence in the Criminal Code and in any other Act of Parliament, allowing penalties up to life imprisonment to denounce and deter this hateful conduct as a crime in itself,” – the briefing explained...

Canada mulls sanctions against violent Israeli settlers in West Bank

Canada is considering imposing sanctions on "extremist" Israeli settlers in the West Bank, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said, a day after the Biden administration issued an executive order against them.

"We are looking into how to make sure that those responsible for extremist violence or extreme settler violence in the West Bank are held to account for it," Trudeau told reporters in Waterloo, Ontario.

Since the 1967 Middle East war, Israel has occupied the West Bank of the Jordan River, which Palestinians want as the core of an independent state. It has built Jewish settlements there that are deemed illegal under international law.

The West Bank had already seen its highest levels of unrest in decades during the 18 months before Hamas's Oct. 7 attack on Israel, and confrontations there have risen sharply since Israeli forces launched their retaliatory offensive on Gaza.
