Washington to divert funds from Central America to support Venezuelan right-wing opposition
from Fort Russ News
The administration of President Donald Trump plans to divert more than $40 million initially earmarked for humanitarian aid in Central America to fund the Venezuelan opposition.
According to the newspaper The Los Angeles Times, in an internal memo obtained by The Times, dated July 11, the US Agency for International Development notified Congress that the money will go to Venezuela in response to an urgent crisis involves US national interests.
In particular, according to the memorandum, it is planned to channel US $41.9 million, originally intended to help Guatemala and Honduras, to finance Venezuelan opponent Juan Guaidó and his group, including wages, good governance, training, propaganda, technical assistance in elections and other projects, supposedly to build democracy.
In mid-June, the Trump administration announced that it would not make new funds available to El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras until their governments implemented concrete measures to curb irregular migration...

Economist, prominent UN figure blames American sanctions for thousands of deaths in Venezuela
from Fox News (believe it or not)
“We find that the sanctions have inflicted, and increasingly inflict,
very serious harm to human life and health, including an estimated more
than 40,000 deaths from 2017-2018; and that these sanctions would fit
the definition of collective punishment of the civilian population as
described in both the Geneva and Hague international conventions, to
which the U.S. is a signatory,” the report, published by the Centre for Economic and Policy Research (CEPR), says.
“They are also illegal under international law and treaties which the U.S. has signed, and would appear to violate U.S. law as well,” it says. Sachs co-authored the report with CEPR's Mark Weisbrot...

A top economist who has worked for years with the United Nations is
claiming that U.S. sanctions are responsible for more than 40,000
deaths in Venezuela and that such actions are illegal under
international and U.S. law -- his latest attack on the Trump
administration in recent weeks.
Jeffrey Sachs,
an economist at Columbia University and a Sustainable Development Goals
(SDG) advocate for U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, co-authored
the report, “Economic Sanctions as Collective Punishment: The Case of
Venezuela,” which criticizes sanctions the U.S. has imposed since 2017.

Leopoldo López Emerges from House Arrest to Bless Failed Coup and Invite US Gov’t into Guaidó Regime
from MintPress News
Amid the early morning chaos of yesterday’s failed US backed coup attempt in Venezuela, Leopoldo López — the political mentor and top adviser to self-declared “Interim President” Juan Guaidó — made a startling claim to a group of international journalists gathered outside the La Carlota airbase in the Venezuelan capital of Caracas.
According to Bloomberg reporter Andrew Rosati, who was present for López’s and Guaidó’s announcement of the now-failed “military uprising,” López told him and other foreign reporters that he and Guaidó — after speaking to high-ranking government officials throughout the Americas and their political allies within Venezuela — wanted the United States government to be a part of the government they hope to install if they succeed in ousting Venezuela’s current president, Nicolás Maduro.
The claim received very little media attention, given the day’s events, despite the fact that López, long believed to be the power behind Guaidó and the architect of his rise to power, stated that Guaidó’s parallel government would aim to essentially turn the country into a colony of the United States. López did not elaborate as to the extent of the role he and Guaidó hoped to see the U.S. play in a future Venezuelan government. Yet, any planned role for the U.S. government in Venezuela’s government would gravely undermine Venezuela’s national sovereignty and any semblance of independence of a future Guaidó-led administration...

Violent, Bigoted Supporters of Juan Guaidó Attempt to Invade Venezuela’s D.C. Embassy
from MintPress News
Emboldened by the attempted military coup — and amidst the ongoing tenancy of the Embassy Protection Collective at Venezuela’s Washington embassy at the invitation of the legitimate government of Venezuela — opposition activists rallied on Tuesday, hurling racist and homophobic slurs at members of the Collective. On several occasions, they attempted to unlawfully break into the embassy and injure its protectors.
MintPress News has been at the embassy in D.C. since Wednesday, recording livestream reports and publishing articles featuring the voices of activists on the front lines in the fight against US imperialism that seeks to overthrow the Democratically elected leader of Venezuela and install a right wing government friendly to US economic interests.
As Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaidó attempted a military coup on Tuesday, pro-opposition activists gathered in far greater numbers outside of the embassy in Washington. MintPress News observed numerous uses of slurs against embassy protectors and multiple instances of violence...

Biden Sides With Trump, Bolton, and Pompeo in Backing Venezuela Coup Effort
from MintPress News
Despite progressive critics and anti-war voices speaking forcefully against the Trump administration’s overt backing of the attempted coup d’état by rightwing opposition forces in Venezuela on Tuesday, 2020 Democratic frontrunner Joe Biden aligned himself with the White House by throwing his support behind the overthrow effort.
“The violence in Venezuela today against peaceful protesters is criminal,” Biden tweeted on Tuesday. “Maduro’s regime is responsible for incredible suffering. The U.S. must stand with the National Assembly & Guaidó in their efforts to restore democracy through legitimate, internationally monitored elections.”
But what Biden embraced as an effort to “restore democracy,” many foreign policy experts—ones not willing to give the benefit of the doubt to people like national security advisor John Bolton, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, and President Donald Trump—called something else entirely: a violent effort by Venezuela’s rightwing elites, led by Juan Guaidó, to overthrow the elected government of President Nicolas Maduro...

Venezuelan Military Putsch Defeated as Leopoldo Lopez Takes Refuge in Spanish Embassy
from Venezuela Analysis
“Interim President” Juan Guaido and right-wing opposition leader Leopoldo Lopez spearheaded an unsuccessful coup attempt in Caracas on Tuesday.
The thwarted uprising started in the early morning hours when renegade military and intelligence officers reportedly released Lopez from house arrest. Lopez then joined Guaido and a handful of soldiers on the Altamira overpass in east Caracas, outside the Francisco de Miranda airbase, known as La Carlota.
Lopez and Guaido released videos on social media, calling on the armed forces to back their efforts and urging supporters to take to the streets, in what they termed as the “final phase” of the so-called “Operation Freedom.” Large crowds of anti-government protesters, as well as opposition lawmakers, made their way to the Altamira overpass.
The scene then saw armed confrontations between the soldiers that backed Juan Guaido and those inside La Carlota airbase. According to witnesses in La Carlota, the Venezuelan armed forces fired tear gas towards the Altamira overpass, where civilian protesters began to gather, whereas Guaido’s soldiers returned live fire. Riot police also appeared on the scene to try and disperse the crowds. There are reports of protesters wounded and arrested that are unconfirmed at the time of writing...

U.S responds to its own failed coup attempt by leaking info on deploying Five-Thousand Blackwater Mercenaries
from Fort Russ
The attempted coup d’état initiated by opposition leader Juan Guaidó at Francisco de Miranda’s military base aims to “justify a military intervention by the US government,” opines the analyst and former director of International Relations of the Presidency of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, Sergio Rodríguez Gelfenstein.
Rodriguez Gelfenstein estimates that the uprising on Tuesday morning at the military base known as “La Carlota” happened “far from the Government Palace” and did not have substantial support from the people and the Armed Forces.
In fact, said the analyst, “many of the soldiers retired because they said they were deceived” to participate in the action deployed near La Carlota by Guaidó and Leopoldo López, who left his house despite being under house arrest.
Gelfenstein commented that “thirty soldiers supporting Guaidó do not compare to the 335,000 men and 2 million militiamen” that make up the Armed Forces of Venezuela. The numbers, however, are disputed. Independent analysis, however, shows that no more than 200,000 men and women form the militias, and it is not possible to confirm the number of soldiers still loyal to the Maduro government.
Rodriguez Gelfenstein noted that “it is clear” that the coup attempt would not overthrow the Nicolas Maduro government, but warned of the true purpose behind the maneuver...

US Regime Change Blueprint Proposed Venezuelan Electricity Blackouts as ‘Watershed Event’ for ‘Galvanizing Public Unrest'
by Max Blumenthal from GreyZone
A September 2010 memo by a US-funded soft power organization that helped train Venezuelan coup leader Juan Guaido and his allies identifies the potential collapse of the country’s electrical sector as “a watershed event” that “would likely have the impact of galvanizing public unrest in a way that no opposition group could ever hope to generate.”
The memo has special relevance today as Guaido moves to exploit nationwide blackouts caused by a major failure at the Simon Bolivar Hydroelectric Plant at Guri dam – a crisis that Venezuela’s government blames on US sabotage.
It was authored by Srdja Popovic of the Center for Applied Non-Violent Action and Strategies (CANVAS), a Belgrade-based “democracy promotion” organization funded by the US government that has trained thousands of US-aligned youth activists in countries where the West seeks regime change.
This group reportedly hosted Guaido and the key leaders of his Popular Will party for a series of training sessions, fashioning them into a “Generation 2007” determined to foment resistance to then-President Hugo Chavez and sabotage his plans to implement “21st century socialism” in Venezuela...
