Israel illegally detaining, torturing Palestinians: Amnesty

The London-based human rights organization Amnesty International on Thursday accused Israel of mistreating and torturing Palestinian prisoners.

Under the Unlawful Combatants Law, Israel systematically detains Palestinians "incommunicado," the group said, with the detainees being denied access to lawyers or contact with their families.

The report, based on interviews with 27 Palestinians including five women and a 14-year-old boy, includes allegations of torture, enforced disappearance, and cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment by Israeli forces.

One man, a 57-year-old pediatrician detained during a raid on a hospital in Gaza City in December 2023, said he was kept handcuffed and blindfolded for 45 days at a military camp while suffering starvation and beatings...

Israeli Police Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir confirms the reports saying Palestinians are suffering atrocious circumstances in Israeli prisons and pushes for even harsher treatment.

Israeli Police Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir confirmed Tuesday’s reports of the atrocious conditions being faced by Palestinian prisoners and defended the legitimacy of such measures. He emphasized that these steps were part of his campaign promises and aimed at minimizing the rights of Palestinians detained over alleged “terrorism” charges to the bare minimum allowed by law.

“Since assuming my role as [Police] Minister, one of my top priorities has been to worsen the conditions for terrorists in prisons and reduce their rights to the minimum required by law,” Ben-Gvir said. “This was a commitment I made to my voters and the people of Israel during the elections when I announced my intention to take on this role.”...

A UN-mandated Independent International Commission of Inquiry has uncovered evidence of egregious sexual violence committed against Palestinian men and women in the Gaza Strip. This adds to a mounting series of reports indicating the issue is widespread and systematic.

The United Nations report, released on June 12 under a Human Rights Council resolution, revealed that Israeli forces “systematically targeted and subjected Palestinians to SGBV [Sexual and Gender-Based Violence] online and in person since October 7, including through forced public nudity, forced public stripping, sexualized torture and abuse, and sexual humiliation and harassment.”

The report noted specific types of sexual violence perpetrated by Israeli soldiers targeting men and boys during ground operations and arrests. Soldiers took videos and photos of Palestinians after stripping them partially or fully naked. The captives were also “coerced to do physical movements while naked.”

Families of men and boys taken captive were made to watch as they were paraded in the street, either fully naked or in their underwear while being subjected to sexual harassment...

NYT details sadistic Israeli abuse of Palestinian detainees from Gaza

The New York Times has disclosed sadistic methods used by Israeli forces including raping and torturing defenseless Palestinian detainees brought in from the Gaza Strip.

The report is the result of a three-month investigation, the paper said, revealing that Gazan detainees held at Israel’s Sde Teiman detention facility had been subjected to gruesome acts of abuse, torture, and mistreatment.

It is based on interviews since October 7 with former detainees, Israeli military officers, doctors, and soldiers who served at the prison facility. 

The Times drew a harrowing picture of some 4,000 Palestinian inmates, many of whom died in custody, due to the inhuman condition created at the Sde Teiman prison.

The report revealed that the Israelis had used cruel techniques against Palestinian detainees, including rape and sexual abuse.

One Palestinian nurse, Muhammad Al-Hamlawi, recounted how a brutal Israeli female interrogator ordered two soldiers to lift him in the air and press his rectum down against a metal stick fixed to the ground. The penetrating stick wounded his rectum, causing it to bleed and leaving the Palestinian male detainee in “unbearable pain.”...
