The Syrian Foreign Ministry has affirmed that Damascus’ engagement in any "talks related to technical matters that may affect the security of Syria and the region" does not signify "the abandonment of Syria’s firm right to the occupied Golan."

In an official statement, the ministry reiterated that "the Golan will remain Syrian land, and there is no legitimacy for the Israeli occupation there."

The Foreign Ministry expressed its deep gratitude to the countries that voted in the United Nations General Assembly in favor of "ending the Israeli occupation of the occupied Syrian Golan." It described the international support as a reflection of global commitment to "international legitimacy and its resolutions, which affirm the Syrian people’s right to their occupied land."

Netanyahu pushes for Israel-controlled ‘buffer zone’ in Syria between Golan Heights, Damascus

Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu has escalated territorial demands in Syria, calling for a mandatory demilitarized “buffer zone” stretching from the fringe of the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights to the outskirts of the capital Damascus.

Netanyahu issued the demand in a statement released by his office on Tuesday, delivered after visiting Israeli forces wounded during a recent incursion into Syrian territory.

The raid targeted the town of Beit Jinn, where Syrian media say at least 13 civilians, including women and children, were killed. The Israeli regime claimed the operation was directed at “militants,” but offered no verified evidence for the identities of those killed.

13 Syrians killed, 25 injured in Israeli aggression on Damascus countryside

At least 13 Syrian people have been killed and more than two dozen others injured in Israeli strikes on the countryside of the capital Damascus amid the occupying regime’s heightened incursions on the Arab country since the fall of former president Bashar al-Assad and the rule of the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) militants.

The casualties, as the Syrian TV reported on Friday, took place in an overnight Israeli attack by helicopters and drones on the town of Beit Jinn in the Damascus suburbs after Israeli forces entered the town and were surrounded by local residents, prompting the outbreak of gunfire and confrontations.

“The helicopters of the occupation army and its artillery shelled Beit Jinn, located on the foothills of Mount Hermon, southwest of Damascus, resulting in 13 martyrs and wounding 25 civilians,” the report said, falling short of specifying the number of the injured and the scope of damage.

The Syrian News Channel — Al-Ikhbariyah Syria — confirmed that the attack coincided with Israeli soldiers entering the town of Beit Jinn as the surrounding areas were being shelled by the regime’s artillery.

The news outlet underlined that the shelling came after clashes between local residents and a patrol of the Israeli occupation army that penetrated the southern town and “kidnapped” three young men...

HTS forces open fire on peaceful Alawite protesters in another act of sectarian violence

Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) forces have opened fire on mass protests led by members of Syria's Alawite minority in coastal cities, where crowds took to the streets to denounce HTS-led sectarian violence.

The cities of Tartous, Latakia, Baniyas, Jableh, and Homs saw thousands of people take to the streets on Tuesday, marching, chanting, and carrying signs condemning the continued violence against Alawites by HTS forces and allied militias.

Local reports said Alawite demonstrators were shot at and wounded by HTS forces in several cities, and others were detained and taken to unknown locations. Gunfire was heard in Latakia’s Agriculture Square roughly an hour after the rally began.

Verified video footage showed a man lying motionless on the ground with a head wound.

Although authorities did not immediately confirm casualties, the so-called Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) reported that at least one person had been wounded by HTS gunfire.

The London-based war monitor also said one was wounded in the coastal city of Latakia.

The demonstrations were largely triggered by a deadly assault on Alawite civilians two days earlier, carried out by HTS regime-backed tribal militias.

The attackers stormed the al-Muhajireen neighborhood in Homs, burning homes and shops, destroying cars, and firing indiscriminately at residents, killing at least two people and injuring dozens...

Saudi Arabia told the US that Syrian security forces should be allowed to deploy to the country's restive south despite Israeli objections, a US official told Middle East Eye.

The official, who requested anonymity due to sensitivities around the topic, said that Saudi Arabia’s Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud told US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Thursday that the kingdom supported Syria’s military asserting control in the southern Syrian province of Sweida.

A readout of the call provided by the State Department said the two sides "discussed regional security matters, including efforts to end the violence in Syria".

It did not provide further details.

The US official briefed on the call, and a second source familiar with the diplomacy, told MEE on Friday that the kingdom was "angry" about Israel attacking Syrian soldiers and dictating military deployments to Damascus. 

Sweida has been the site of sectarian violence between the majority Druze community and Sunni Bedouins. After bloody fighting broke out on Sunday, the Syrian government deployed troops to Sweida at the request of local authorities, prompting Israel to launch severe strikes against the Syrian army.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu then ordered Syria's government not to deploy troops south. When President Ahmed al-Sharaa did, Israel launched strikes on Syrian military convoys.

Israel has bombed the military headquarters in the Syrian capital, Damascus.

The Wednesday airstrike escalates tensions as the regime has warned the ruling HTS administration to withdraw forces from the southern city of Suwayda.

Israeli minister for military affairs Israel Katz said in a statement that the military “struck the entrance of the Syrian regime’s military headquarters in the area of Damascus in Syria.”

According to reports, two drone attacks hit the premises of the Syrian Ministry of Defense—one in front of the main entrance and another near the rear of the building.

Medical sources in Syria said at least one person was killed and 18 others wounded in the attacks.

Israel said it struck a "military target" in the area of the presidential palace in Damascus. The military, it said, "continues to strike military targets belonging to the Syrian regime in Damascus.”

Katz warned Syria’s interim regime to withdraw its forces from the southern Druze-majority city of Suwayda, where fierce clashes have erupted in recent days between the Druze community and Bedouins, who are Sunni Muslims.

Israel is likely to send more troops to the Syrian border.

Iran: Israel’s strikes on Syria aimed at destroying independent state

Iran says the Israeli regime’s airstrikes on Syria are primarily intended to destroy the defensive, economic, and infrastructural capabilities of an independent country.

In a statement on Saturday, Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei strongly condemned the Israeli regime’s military attacks on various areas in Syria and the destruction of the country’s civilian facilities and defense capabilities in Damascus, Latakia, Idlib, Hama, Quneitra, and Dara'a.

"It is clear to everyone that the main goal of the occupying regime is to destroy and eliminate the defensive, economic, and infrastructural capabilities of Syria as an independent country, so that it [Israel] can pursue its malicious interests in this country and the region,” he said.

He added that the Israeli attacks on Syria are also aimed at continuing simultaneously the genocide in occupied Palestine and aggression and occupation in Lebanon.

Israel bombs targets near Syria’s presidential palace – IDF

Israel said on Friday that it conducted airstrikes near the presidential compound in Syria, in response to violence against the Druze minority.

“A short while ago, warplanes attacked the area near Ahmed Hussein al-Sharaa’s palace in Damascus,” the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said in a brief statement.

Al-Sharaa, also known as Abu Mohammad al-Julani, led a coalition of Islamist forces that toppled President Bashar Assad in December 2024. The rapid seizure of the capital and other cities in western Syria was accompanied by massacres of Druze, Christians, and Assad loyalists.

According to Al Jazeera, clashes erupted on Monday in the towns of Jaramana and Sahnaya south of Damascus after an audio clip circulated on social media in which a man criticized the Prophet Mohammed. The recording was attributed to a Druze scholar, who has denied responsibility.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz issued a joint statement on Friday, describing the IDF strikes as “a clear message to the Syrian regime.” They added: “We will not allow forces to be sent south of Damascus or any threat to the Druze community.”...

As tensions have been running high between Türkiye and Israel on the Syrian front, Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said on Friday that Tel Aviv's actions in the war-torn country risk future regional instability.

In an interview with Reuters on the sidelines of a meeting of NATO foreign ministers in Brussels, Fidan said Ankara does not aim for confrontation with Tel Aviv.

If the new administration in Damascus wants to have "certain understandings" with Israel, which, like Türkiye, is a neighbor of Syria, then that is their own business, he added.

Britain warns against Israeli attacks on Syria, citing regional stability concerns

Britain has urged Israel against conducting strikes on Syrian territory, saying that Syria’s stability is in the best interest of the entire region.

Hamish Falconer, the British Minister of State for the Middle East and North Africa, in a post on X on Friday, said that while Israel’s strikes in Syria have led to civilian deaths and regional destabilization, the regime should prioritize diplomatic efforts and refrain from military action in Syria.

Israel announces indefinite military presence in Syria

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) are preparing for an indefinite stay in southern Syria, Defense Minister Israel Katz has said during a visit to the Mount Hermon, which is across the Israeli border in the area. The nation’s military expanded its presence on Syrian soil back in December, following the ousting of former president, Bashar Assad.

West Jerusalem is seeking to establish a so-called security zone on the occupied Syrian territories and in the adjacent areas to supposedly combat threats to its national security and effectively keep any other military forces out of the area, Katz said on Wednesday.

“The IDF is prepared to stay in Syria for an unlimited amount of time. We will hold the security area in Hermon and make sure that all the security zone in southern Syria is demilitarized and clear of weapons and threats,” the defense minister stated.

According to the Times of Israel, the IDF has established nine military bases on territories they had occupied since December, including two on Mount Hermon...

Israeli media claims Trump to withdraw US troops from Syria

Israeli media on Tuesday alleged U.S. President Donald Trump plans to pull out thousands of American troops from Syria, something that would impact Israel's expansionist plans in the south and activities of the terrorist groups it supports in the north.

Israel's official public broadcasting Kan reported that "senior White House officials conveyed a message to their Israeli counterparts indicating that President Trump intends to pull thousands of U.S. troops from Syria."

It added that "the withdrawal of American forces from Syria will raise significant concerns in Tel Aviv."

According to a Pentagon announcement in December, the U.S. has some 2,000 troops deployed in Syria.

Meanwhile, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz, visited the occupied Mount Hermon in Syria on Tuesday, emphasizing Israel's intent to maintain a military presence there indefinitely following its occupation last month.

The Israeli minister of military affairs says the regime’s troops, who seized ground at a so-called “buffer zone” inside the strategic Syrian Golan Heights after the fall of Bashar al-Assad, will remain stationed there indefinitely.

Mount Hermon, known as Jabal al-Shaykh in Arabic, is a huge cluster of snowcapped mountain peaks towering above the Syria-Lebanon border.

It overlooks the Damascus countryside as well as the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights, which Israel captured from Syria during the 1967 Six-Day War.

Peace with Israel Tops the Agenda for Syria’s New Leaders

It is not just isolated voices advocating for normalization; the new Syrian government and its backers appear determined to establish ties with Israel, even as Israel continues its occupation of Syrian territory and the bombardment of what remains of its infrastructure. While apologists attempt to justify Damascus’s Israel-friendly comments, the writing on the wall has long been clear.

The new Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) backed Mayor of Damascus, Maher Marwan, stirred controversy last week when he called for normalization with Israel. Even though Damascus, the city he now governs, endures frequent Israeli airstrikes, Marwan defended his stance in an interview with NPR. “Our problem is not with Israel,” he stated, adding, “We don’t want to meddle in anything that will threaten Israel’s security.”

Following widespread public backlash, the HTS-led government in Damascus released a statement addressing Marwan’s remarks. The statement proclaimed that Marwan’s comments didn’t necessarily reflect the policies of the al-Jolani government, but it stopped short of explicitly denying his call for normalization with Israel.

The sentiments expressed by Marwan are consistent with those of Syria’s de facto leader, Ahmed al-Shara’a, known more commonly by his ISIS-associated moniker, Abu Mohammed al-Jolani. Al-Jolani once said that Syrian territory must not be used as a launching pad for conflict with Israel. He emphasized, “We do not want any conflict, whether with Israel or anyone else.”...

Syria says 14 interior ministry personnel were killed in ambush by al-Assad supporters

Syria’s new Interior Minister Mohammed Abdel Rahman says 14 "interior ministry personnel" were killed by what he described as the "remnants of the Assad regime”.

Clashes took place in multiple cities, including the coastal city of Tartus, Homs, and even the capital Damascus. It represents the most violent and widespread unrest in the country since the removal of long-time autocratic President Bashar al-Assad earlier this month.

Rahman vowed to crack down on “anyone who dares to undermine” the country’s security, endanger the lives of its citizens or halt the processes of peace and stabilising its future.

On Wednesday, demonstrations took place in the city of Homs, according to state media, and were led by members of the minority Alawite and Shia Muslim communities.

The Alawite protests were apparently in part sparked by an online video showing the burning of an Alawite shrine. The interim authorities insisted the video was old and not a recent incident.

Some protesters called for the release of soldiers from the former Syrian army now imprisoned by the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS). UK-based war monitor Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said at least one protestor was killed and five were wounded in Homs as HTS forces looked to quell the unrest...
