A union representing US Centers for Disease Control employees has demanded that the federal government condemn vaccine misinformation after a man who evidently blamed the Covid-19 vaccination for making him depressed and suicidal aimed gunfire Friday at the CDC’s headquarters in Atlanta.

The 30-year-old shooting suspect, who killed a police officer and died during the attack, had also tried to get into the CDC’s headquarters – but he was stopped by guards before driving to a pharmacy across the street and opening fire, a law enforcement official told the Associated Press on Saturday.

The CDC workers’ union said the deadly violence on Friday was not random and “compounds months of mistreatment, neglect, and vilification that CDC staff have endured”. It said vaccine misinformation had put scientists at risk...

CDC shooting suspect distrusted vaccines, neighbor says

In the year leading up to Friday afternoon’s shooting at the CDC, Patrick Joseph White spoke increasingly with a neighbor about his distrust of the COVID-19 vaccine.

The 30-year-old was known as a handyman of sorts in his quiet west Cobb neighborhood, regularly mowing lawns, trimming shrubs and walking dogs for his neighbors. 

But in recent months, something seemed to change, said Nancy Hoalst, who lives directly across the street from White’s family.

She said White regularly brought up his distrust of vaccines, even during conversations that were entirely unrelated.

“He was very unsettled and he very deeply believed that vaccines hurt him and were hurting other people.” Hoalst said. 

“He emphatically believed that.”

Hoalst, who has lived in the neighborhood about five years, said she always knew White to be friendly. 

In the fall, he would take it upon himself to blow the leaves off her lawn and driveway ahead of Halloween and the influx of trick-or-treaters.

“He seemed like a good guy,” she said. “He would volunteer to walk dogs. He did good things.”

A Georgia man who opened fire on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta on Friday, shooting dozens of rounds into four buildings and killing a police officer, had blamed a Covid-19 vaccine for making him depressed and suicidal, a law enforcement official told the Associated Press on Saturday.

The 30-year-old gunman, identified by the Georgia bureau of investigation as Patrick Joseph White, tried to get into the CDC’s headquarters but was stopped by guards before driving to a CVS across the street and opening fire, the official said. White died during Friday’s violence.

The suspect’s father contacted police and said his son was upset about the death of his dog, and had also become fixated on the Covid-19 vaccine, an official said.

One of White’s neighbors told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution: “He very deeply believed that vaccines hurt him and were hurting other people.”

The police officer who was shot to death in a confrontation with a gunman was identified as 33-year-old David Rose – a husband and father of two daughters who had a son on the way.

Rose, who joined the DeKalb county police force in September of last year and previously served in the US marines, had responded to reports of gunfire near the CDC campus. He was later rushed to the Emory University hospital, where he died of his injuries.

Here’s the story as best as I can figure it.

Some of us out here discovered he wasn’t actually a “drifter” but in fact had a home in the same city he has been claiming online as recently as late last year. The house is very nice and apparently still the home of his “estranged” wife.

 

I noticed on Google Street view that the home had a confederate flag flying in the front yard and Raw Story and other big name news agencies picked up on that pretty quick. In fact, my screen-grab from Google Street view is on Raw Story’s front page. They linked back to my article about the finding the flag in front of the home he listed as his address.

FBI stumped over Trump shooter’s motive

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has so far failed to establish what drove a 20-year-old man to open fire at US presidential candidate Donald Trump at a campaign rally on Saturday, the Associated Press (AP) news agency has reported. 

The FBI has conducted an extensive search in the three days following the assassination attempt, cracking into Thomas Matthew Crooks’ mobile phone, scouring his computer, home, and car, as well as interviewing more than 100 people, but the “mystery” motive remains as “elusive” as the moment the shooting happened, the agency outlined.

Police described the suspect, Michael William Nash, as a 42-year-old male who lived with his mother. Bouchard said the man had no criminal history, but was believed to have had mental health challenges.

Nash died by suicide after being "contained" at a Shelby Township home for several hours following the attack, Bouchard said. Bouchard said after attempts to contact the suspect failed, drones were deployed to examine the home, where Nash was found dead.

Inside the home on the kitchen table was what looked like a semi-automatic rifle, Bouchard said. He suggested Nash may have had plans for a "second chapter."

"If he had planned to do anything else, and it wouldn't surprise me, because having that on the kitchen table is not an everyday activity," Bouchard said Saturday.

Bouchard described the shooting as "very random" and "bizarre." Nash has no known connection to the victims, he said. Detectives are still working to determine a motive.

A gunman killed a sixth-grade student and injured five other people at a high school in Perry, Iowa, early Thursday morning just as students were arriving back to school after their winter break.

Four of the injured were students, and one was an administrator, Mitch Mortvedt, assistant director of the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, said at a news conference on Thursday. One of the injured victims was in critical condition.

The administrator was identified by Easton Valley Community School District as Dan Marburger, the principal at Perry High School, where the shooting took place. Officials did not release the names of any other victims.

The gunman, identified as Dylan Butler, a 17-year-old student at the high school, died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, Mr. Mortvedt said. Law enforcement officials believe he acted alone and said the motive for the attack was not yet known...
