Tariff revenue makes it hard for Supreme Court to rule against Trump, Bessent says

(The Trump regime of unqualified hacks pretending to be in charge has stated the Court of Appeals will cast us all into another Great Depression if they uphold the rule of law and rule against his illegal tariff taxes on the American people. According to them, there will be a crash if his LARPer government has to pay back the 1.6 billion dollars they have raised so far (they claim it's in the trillions which is a lie)

At the same time, his new head of BLS says they aren't going to release monthly jobs data reports anymore, I guess to cover-up for all the jobs they are losing as a direct result of Trump fucking up the economy with his tariffs and 'deals'.  BTW, Trump hasn't made any trade 'deals'. Trade deals are approved by congress, several hundred pages long and signed by other countries. He's just made the shit up wholesale as he imposes new, illegal taxes on the American people to pay for the tax breaks he gave Big Business and Billionaires.)

from Reuters

Increasing revenues flowing into U.S. government coffers from tariffs would make it difficult for the Supreme Court to rule against the Trump administration on the issue if a lower court case makes its way to country's top court, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said on Tuesday.

"The more money coming in, it gets harder and harder for SCOTUS to rule against us," Bessent said in an interview on Fox Business Network's "Kudlow."

Bessent was responding to a question about a case currently in front of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit in Washington, D.C., which challenges the legality of what Trump calls "reciprocal" tariffs as well as a separate set of tariffs imposed in February against China, Canada and Mexico.

Modi and Lula discuss Trump's tariffs amid strained trade relations with US

(As expected, Trump's ridiculous tariff plan (raise more taxes from the American people to cover costs of giving trillions to Big Business and billionaires) is only succeeding in 1. making our economy scream and 2. driving other nations closer together in trade and their hatred of us. Promises made, promises kept.)

from PressTV

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva have spoken by phone regarding various issues, including the tariffs recently imposed by the United States on goods from both nations.

Lula confirmed a state visit to India in early 2026 during the call on Thursday, a day after the Brazilian leader told Reuters news agency he would initiate a conversation among the BRICS group of countries on addressing US President Donald Trump's tariff measures.

The group of major emerging economies also includes China, Russia and South Africa.

Lula's office confirmed that in the call, both leaders discussed the international economic situation and the unilateral tariffs affecting Brazil and India, which are among the nations most impacted by Trump's actions.

Trump recently imposed a 25% tariff on Indian goods, raising the total tariff to 50%, alleging that India continues to purchase Russian oil.

He also imposed similar tariffs on Brazil, affecting sectors including aircraft, energy, and orange juice.

During the conversation, Modi and Lula reiterated their goal of increasing bilateral trade to over $20 billion annually by 2030, up from approximately $12 billion last year.

They also agreed to enhance the scope of their preferential trade agreement and discussed virtual payment platforms to facilitate trade...

Trump pledges to ‘substantially’ raise US tariffs on India over Russian oil

(Trump's tariffs are causing a great deal of harm to American citizens, some of whom were foolish enough to vote for him less than a year ago or buy his grifting BS ever since. So now, he imposes even more of them. Brilliant.

But that's what you voted for, right?)

from al Jazeera

United States President Donald Trump says he will “substantially” raise tariffs on India, intensifying the row between the two countries after years of rapprochement.

Trump accused India in a social media post on Monday of buying and reselling “massive amounts” of Russian oil “for big profits”.

“They don’t care how many people in Ukraine are being killed by the Russian War Machine,” the US president wrote. “Because of this, I will be substantially raising the Tariff paid by India to the USA. Thank you for your attention to this matter!!!”

He did not specify the rate of the tariffs or when they would take effect. The US imported $87.4bn in Indian goods in 2024, according to US government data.

Last week, Trump announced 25 percent tariffs on Indian goods, citing New Delhi’s levies on US products and purchases of Russian oil and military equipment.

Later on Monday, India rejected Western criticism of its business dealings with Russia, noting that the US and European countries have continued to import Russian goods and energy products after the war...

Global trade in chaos as Trump imposes steep tariffs on 92 countries

from PressTV

US President Donald Trump has imposed steep tariffs on exports from 92 countries, including Canada, Switzerland, Brazil, and India, ahead of his self-imposed August 1 deadline that is expected to reignite global trade tensions.

“We have made a few deals today that are excellent deals for the country,” Trump told reporters on Thursday afternoon after signing executive orders to impose tariffs between 15 and 41 percent on goods from around the global market.

He ordered raising tariffs on Canadian imports to 35 percent for goods deemed non-compliant with the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), citing Canada’s failure to curb fentanyl smuggling across the border, saying Canada had "failed to cooperate" in curbing illicit narcotics flows into the US.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said in a statement that he was “disappointed” with Trump’s tariff hike, adding that “Canadians will be our own best customer.” He emphasized that Canada accounts for just 1 percent of US fentanyl imports, highlighting the minimal role Canada plays in the US fentanyl issue.

"While we will continue to negotiate with the United States on our trading relationship, the Canadian government is laser focused on what we can control: building Canada strong," he said in a post on X.

The decision pertaining to Canada contrasted sharply with Trump's decision to grant Mexico a 90-day reprieve from higher tariffs of 30% on many goods to allow time to negotiate a broader trade pact. However, Trump said the US would continue to levy a 50% tariff on Mexican steel, aluminum, and copper and a 25% tariff on Mexican autos and on non-USMCA-compliant goods subject to tariffs related to the US fentanyl crisis...

'This Was No Accident': Trump-GOP Policies Blamed as Health Insurers Prepare to Jack Up Premiums

from Common Dreams

Next year, Americans who buy health insurance through the Affordable Care Act exchanges are set to pay significantly more for coverage—and experts say policies advanced by President Donald Trump and congressional Republicans are at least partially to blame.

An analysis released Friday by the health policy research organization KFF and the Peterson Center on Healthcare found that across a sample of more than 105 ACA marketplace insurers in 19 states and the District of Columbia, companies are set to increase premiums by a median of 15%.

The analysis noted that insurers have cited a number of factors to justify pushing up premiums, including Trump's tariffs—which could drive up drug, equipment, and supply costs—and the expectation that the Republican-controlled Congress will not extend ACA tax credits that are set to expire at the end of the year.

"If Congress takes no action to renew these enhanced tax credits, enhanced subsidies will expire at the end of 2025, which will cause premium payments for subsidized enrollees to increase by over 75% starting in January 2026," the analysis states. "Insurers expect a large share of enrollees to leave the market, and that those enrollees will be healthier on average, thus leaving the risk pool sicker on average."...

Behind Trump’s Decision to Tax Brazil to Save Bolsonaro

(On behalf of a fascist FROM ANOTHER COUNTRY, Donald Trump is going to impose YET ANOTHER TARIFF TAX ON THE AMERICAN PEOPLE. Are we going to have to explain, YET AGAIN, who actually pays the tariff taxes on goods imported into America?!? Trump and his fascist cronies are MAKING OUR ECONOMY SCREAM ON PURPOSE... just like Biden did before him. Change? Not one iota.)

from the New York Times

Since March, the son of the former Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro has been roaming the halls of the White House.

Eduardo Bolsonaro, 41, is a sitting Brazilian congressman, but his latest job has been to convince U.S. officials that a dangerous Brazilian Supreme Court justice wants to throw him and his father into prison, simply for fighting against what they claim was a stolen election.

And in multiple visits to Washington over the past several months, he has found a sympathetic audience.

“This is nothing more, or less, than an attack on a Political Opponent — Something I know much about!” President Trump posted online Monday. “It happened to me, times 10.”

Eduardo Bolsonaro said he had been pushing senior White House officials to place sanctions on the Brazilian judge overseeing his father’s prosecution.

Then, on Wednesday, Mr. Trump opted for something far more damaging: a 50 percent tariff on all Brazilian imports starting Aug. 1, retaliation for what he called a “witch hunt” against Jair Bolsonaro...

Trump imposes 35% tariff on Canada effective Aug. 1

(TrumpyBear trying ANYTHING to distract from his Epstein betrayal.)

from al Mayadeen English

US President Donald Trump revealed on Thursday that his administration plans to implement a 35% tariff on Canadian imports, set to take effect beginning August 1.

"It is a Great Honor for me to send you this letter in that it demonstrates the strengths and commitments of our Trading Relationship, and the fact that the United States of America has agreed to continue working with Canada, despite Canada having financially retaliated against the United States," Trump said in a post on his social media platform Truth Social.

"As you will recall, the United States imposed Tariffs on Canada to deal with our Nation's Fentanyl crisis, which is caused, in part, by Canada's failure to stop the drugs from pouring into our country," he stated in a letter addressed to Canada's new Prime Minister, Mark Carney.

President Trump emphasized that instead of collaborating with Washington, Ottawa chose to retaliate with its own tariffs, clarifying that the newly announced 35% levy by the US would be distinct from any existing sector-specific tariffs. He additionally warned that any goods rerouted to circumvent the higher duties would face additional penalties...

Brazilians Rally Around Lula After Trump Tariff Threat

from Common Dreams

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva may have gotten a political boost thanks to the intervention of U.S. President Donald Trump.

On Wednesday, Trump announced he was slapping all Brazilian imports with a 50% tariff to protest the criminal trial of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, a longtime Trump ally who was indicted on charges related to an alleged coup plot to illegally remain in power after he lost the 2022 general election.

However, it does not appear that Trump's intervention into Brazil's domestic politics is helping Bolsonaro in the court of public opinion and Brazilian publication Globo reports that Brazilians have been swarming the U.S. president's Instagram account and leaving messages telling him to "leave Brazil in peace" while insisting their country is "not a lawless land."

In an analysis piece published by the São Paulo-based Folha, journalist Igor Gielow declared that Bolsonaro was an "immediate loser" of Trump's decision, as in the past he has declared Trump to be his political idol and the two are generally seen as joined at the hip. What's more, Gielow argues that the Trump tariffs are most likely to hurt Brazil's agribusiness sector, which is where the core of Bolsonaro's political support lies...

US federal court blocks Trump's sweeping tariffs in legal blow to trade policy

from PressTV

A US federal court has ruled illegal President Donald Trump's sweeping tariffs, delivering a significant blow to one of his administration's central economic policies.

A three-judge panel at the New York Court of International Trade issued the decision following multiple legal challenges that contended Trump overstepped his presidential powers, making US trade policy subject to arbitrary presidential decisions and causing global economic instability.

While tariffs generally require congressional authorization, Trump circumvented this by claiming that the country’s trade deficits amounted to a national emergency. This unprecedented justification enabled him to unilaterally impose far-reaching tariffs on nearly all US trading partners last month - a sudden decision that triggered significant market volatility.

The judicial panel emphasized they were not evaluating "the wisdom or likely effectiveness of the president’s use of tariffs as leverage," but rather assessing the legality of the tariffs' implementation. As the ruling clarified, the tariffs were struck down not because such use is unwise or ineffective, "but because [federal law] does not allow it."

The ruling additionally halted a distinct series of tariffs the administration had placed on China, Mexico, and Canada – measures originally justified as combating drug trafficking and illegal immigration into the United States...

US to cut 'de minimis' tariff on China shipments to 54% from 120%

from al Mayadeen English

The United States is set to reduce the de minimis tariff on China shipments from 120% to 54%, while retaining a $100 flat fee, according to a White House executive order issued Monday.

The updated policy will take effect at 12:01 a.m. (0401 GMT) on May 14, 2025.

This revision alters an earlier order by the Trump administration, which had planned to impose a flat $200 duty or a 120% tariff starting in June. The change affects shipments valued up to $800 sent via postal services, which previously benefited from minimal inspections and duty-free status...

‘Vance Go Back!’ — Indian Farmers on US VP’s Visit

from Consortium News

Thousands of farmers and working-class people in cities and villages across India took to the streets to protest the visit of U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance.  They claim he has come to finalize an agreement which will be a disaster for India’s agriculture and small industries.

Vance arrived in New Delhi on Monday on a four-day tour in the country. As per widespread reports, his primary agenda is to finalize a trade agreement between the two countries.  The talks over the agreement have been ongoing since the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the U.S. in February.

The protesters gathered in villages and district headquarters across India with posters and banners denouncing the Indian government’s failures to safeguard their interests and chanting slogans such as “Vance go back,” and “India is not for sale!”  In some places protesters also burned effigies of Vance.

Left-leaning All India Kisan Sabha (AIKS), the largest farmers’ group in the country, issued a statement on April 18 in which it asked all its units to launch the Vance go back campaign and to oppose the proposed trade agreement with the U.S. It called the agreement a surrender of India’s interests.

The AIKS statement claimed that Vance’s visit to India “is a part of putting pressure upon the state of India and the corporate-led ruling classes to surrender the national interests to facilitate windfall profiteering to the multinational companies.” ...

Trump announces 90-day pause on ‘reciprocal’ tariffs with exception of China

from CNN

President Donald Trump announced a complete three-month pause on all the “reciprocal” tariffs that went into effect at midnight, with the exception of China, a stunning reversal from a president who had insisted historically high tariffs were here to stay.

But enormous tariffs will remain on China, the world’s second-largest economy. In fact, Trump said they will be increased to 125% from 104% after China announced additional retaliatory tariffs against the United States earlier Wednesday. All other countries that were subjected to reciprocal tariff rates Wednesday will see rates go back down to the universal 10% rate, he said.

“Based on the lack of respect that China has shown to the World’s Markets, I am hereby raising the Tariff charged to China by the United States of America to 125%, effective immediately,” Trump said in his social media post. “At some point, hopefully in the near future, China will realize that the days of ripping off the U.S.A., and other Countries, is no longer sustainable or acceptable,” he wrote.

Speaking to reporters after the announcement, Trump said, “Nothing’s over yet, but we have a tremendous amount of spirit from other countries, including China. China wants to make a deal, they just don’t know how quite to go about it.”

Mexico and Canada won’t face the 10% tariffs, a White House official told CNN. Almost every good coming from the two nations will continue to be tariffed at 25%, unless they are compliant with the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement, in which case they won’t face tariffs. However, that does not apply to sector-specific tariffs Trump has imposed.

Wall Street breathed a sigh of relief, however, that Trump was backing down on other extreme trade measures. Stocks rallied sharply on the news – even though the 10% universal tariff on all imports coming into the United States remained in effect.

The Dow surged nearly 3,000 points or 7.87%, on Wednesday. The S&P 500 shot up 9.5%. The tech-heavy Nasdaq soared 12.2%. This marked the best day for the S&P 500 since October 2008. The Nasdaq posted its best day since January 2001 and its second-best day on record. While the Dow posted its best day in five years...

Trump tariffs spark trade war, China and EU retaliate

from al Mayadeen English

US President Donald Trump has fanned the flames of the global trade war by imposing a base 10% tariff on all US imports and reciprocal tariffs on Wednesday, which he dubbed "Liberation Day".

The White House unveiled sweeping new tariffs, sparking immediate upheaval in global markets as leaders around the world denounced the measures and vowed to retaliate against the levies.

The base 10% tariff goes into effect on April 5, and the higher reciprocal levies on April 9.

Facing newly imposed 54% tariffs on exports to the US, China pledged to retaliate with countermeasures, while the European Union also threatened to respond, as both allies and rivals of Washington united in condemning the move, fearing it could deliver a crippling shock to global trade.

"The consequences will be dire for millions of people around the globe," EU Chief Ursula von der Leyen said in a statement, adding that the European Union is planning on retaliating to the levies imposed by Trump should talks with the US falter. The European Union was hit with a 20% reciprocal tariff...

President Trump’s Tariff Plans on 'Liberation Day'

from the New York Times

Today is, in President Trump’s telling, “Liberation Day.” For decades, many countries have imposed higher trade barriers on the United States than America does on them. In a Rose Garden event, Trump plans to strike back with tariffs that he claims will be “reciprocal” — ones that merely counter the penalties of other nations.

The logic is intuitive: Why shouldn’t we impose tariffs on countries that have imposed tariffs on us? Europe’s tax on U.S. cars, for instance, has been four times as high as America’s tax on European vehicles. That doesn’t seem fair.

Past presidents asked the same question — and came to a different conclusion than Trump did. They saw such tariffs as self-harm. That’s because America would lose more in a global trade war than every major economy except Mexico, experts estimate...

U.S. officials cracking down on people trying to bring valuable eggs across the border

from CBC  (posted by Aunt BB)

Egg interceptions up 116% so far this year, while seizures of fentanyl down 32%

U.S. President Donald Trump has repeatedly said the flow of the deadly drug fentanyl across the border must be stopped.

But U.S. border officials are increasingly cracking down on another valuable product these days: eggs.

Officials made 3,254 egg-related seizures in January and February 2025, according to new data released by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP). That's a 116 per cent increase in egg seizures compared to the 1,508 events the same two months a year ago.

The rise comes as U.S. wholesale egg prices are shattering records as an accelerating outbreak of bird flu in laying hens slashes supplies. Trump promised to lower egg prices on his first day in office but prices increased 59 per cent on a year-on-year basis in February, the first full month of his administration.

And while wholesale prices may be coming back down, they "have yet to be reflected at store shelves," according to the USDA's most recent egg markets overview...

Trade wars erupt as Trump hits Canada, Mexico, China with steep tariffs

(Trump administration is continuing with Biden admin's plan to make the economy scream. In all likelihood so they can bring about... oh dare I say it?... the Great Reset and their digital currency agenda. Yep. The WEF is all about smaller government, deregulation and privatizations. All the stuff Trump and Musk are doing as fast as they can. And you thought it was over. Nope. Not by a longshot.)

from Reuters

U.S. President Donald Trump's new 25% tariffs on imports from Mexico and Canada took effect on Tuesday, along with a doubling of duties on Chinese goods to 20%, launching new trade conflicts with the top three U.S. trading partners.

The tariff actions, which could upend nearly $2.2 trillion in two-way annual U.S. trade went live at 12:01 a.m. EST (0501 GMT), hours after Trump declared that all three countries had failed to do enough to stem the flow of the deadly fentanyl opioid and its precursor chemicals into the U.S.

China responded immediately after the deadline, announcing additional tariffs of 10%-15% on certain U.S. imports from March 10 and a series of new export restrictions for designated U.S. entities.

Canada and Mexico, which have enjoyed a virtually tariff-free trading relationship with the U.S. for three decades, were poised to immediately retaliate against their longtime ally.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Ottawa would respond with immediate 25% tariffs on C$30 billion ($20.7 billion) worth of U.S. imports, and another C$125 billion ($86.2 billion) if Trump's tariffs were still in place in 21 days. He said previously that Canada would target American beer, wine, bourbon, home appliances and Florida orange juice...

Donald Trump declares "BRICS is dead," claims 100% tariff threat stopped Bloc’s dollar moves

from some greedy fucking website

US President Donald Trump has issued a blunt warning to BRICS nations, threatening a 100% tariff on all imports into the United States if they proceed with launching a common currency. Speaking just hours before a scheduled meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Trump dismissed the economic bloc’s relevance, declaring, "BRICS is dead."

Trump did not hold back in his criticism. "BRICS was put there for a bad purpose... I told them if they want to play games with the dollar, then they are going to be hit by a 100% tariff. The day they mention that they want to do it, they will come back and say - we beg you, we beg you. BRICS is dead since I mentioned that..." he stated. His comments reinforce his long-standing position that any move to undermine the US dollar’s dominance in global trade would be met with severe economic consequences

While answering whether he wanted to dismantle BRICS or be part of it, Trump responded, "I don't care, but BRICS was put there for a bad purpose and most of those people don't want it. They don't even want to talk about it now. They're afraid to talk about it because I told them if they want to play games with the dollar, then they're going to be hit with a 100% tariff."

don't bother going
