Widespread firings start at federal health agencies including many in leadership

The Trump administration began sending notices of termination to thousands of staffers at federal health agencies Tuesday, according to interviews with employees and officials at multiple agencies and e-mails reviewed by NPR.

The Department of Health and Human Services last week announced it planned to dismiss 10,000 people. These cuts come on top of around 10,000 people already leaving the agencies under the Trump administration's Fork in the Road offer and early retirement.

Termination emails went out Tuesday morning to employees and leadership of agencies within HHS, the Food and Drug Administration, the National Institutes of Health, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as well as several smaller agencies.

Many of those workers only found out they had been fired when they tried to badge into the building after waiting in line and couldn't get in, NPR learned from multiple sources at HHS who didn't want to share their names for fear of repercussions...

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is going dark, along with other federal agencies within the umbrella of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. This week, the returning Trump administration told these agencies to stop talking to the public—for how long, no one knows.

The Washington Post first broke news of Trump’s sweeping directive late Tuesday evening. Staff at these agencies have been reportedly ordered to cease external communication for the time being. The move is the latest to unnerve outside experts about the direction of the country’s public health infrastructure under Trump.

The order was delivered by Stefanie Spear, a newly hired deputy chief of staff at HHS, according to the Post. Spear was the press secretary for Robert F. Kennedy Jr. during his 2024 presidential campaign, who has since been nominated by Trump to lead HHS. Affected staff told the Post that the directive lacked specific details, including the reasoning behind it, how long the pause is expected to last, and whether there are any exceptions allowed.

Gizmodo reached out to the HHS for comment but did not hear back by the time of publication...

Dear Dr. Ladapo,

Thank you for your letter regarding COVID-19 vaccine safety. We appreciate this opportunity to address your questions and we would like to correct the associated misinterpretations and misinformation about the data from the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS), in the spirit of transparency and supporting and serving the health of our nation.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) continue to diligently monitor a variety of data sources to identify any potential risks of the vaccines and to ensure that information is available to the public. That said, focusing on adverse events in the absence of causal association and without the perspective of countervailing benefits is a great disservice to both individuals and public health. Like every other medical intervention, there are adverse effects from vaccination. Serious adverse events from COVID-19 vaccines are rare and are far outweighed by the benefits of these vaccines for every age group.

' The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) last week approved adding Covid-19 vaccinations to the recommended vaccine schedules for children and adults. Although the vote for the recommendation was unanimous, several members of the ACIP stressed they were not setting a requirement for anyone to be vaccinated. The recommendation included a statement which stressed this was not a requirement for children to attend school. "Adding the COVID-19 vaccine to the recommended childhood immunization schedule does not constitute a requirement that any child receive the vaccine," offered Dr. Nirav Shah, an ACIP member and Director of Maine's Center for Disease Control and Prevention. The meeting started rumors saying the vote created a nationwide student mandate. Even though this isn’t true, it did start a series of legal moves by state attorney generals.'
